5.0 out of 5 stars Great artist, February 25, 2005

I bought this CD without seeing a review of it, so I felt I should help other customers out if you are, like me, flip-flopping between this and another of her CDs. Especially because this isn't an artist you hear on the radio or anything. I bought this only about six months ago and she is now one of my favorite artists; I own three other CDs by her. It's sometimes hard to find a female vocalist who's not too...nice, for lack of a better word. I feel like Holly's songs are really honest, uninhibited, what women *really* think. Besides that, it's just good music, great to sing along to. This is one of my favorite CDs though Truly She Is None Other is more conventional and may be better to start with. I think the best songs are "Just Once", "I Thought Wrong", "King of Everything" and "The Better of Me".

4.0 out of 5 stars She Knows Her Stuff, October 22, 2008

This review is from: Main Attraction (Audio CD)
This is my third Holly Golightly CD, and so far, it's my favorite. (I may have rated the first two more highly out of the excitement of discovery--at my age, it's always good to come across something this much younger than you that still rocks.) Serial Girlfriend and Painted On both highlight Golightly's mastery of American southern blues, country, and early British invasion pop, each as separate genres. This one, The Main Attraction, seems to blend them all more effortlessly into a trance inducing drive, but it's a drive into the clouds, a Lincoln cruising on meringue, but a perfect meringue, one done by a master chef. Golightly is no light confection, but a consummate musician of rhythms and hypnotic tones and dark, must I say, lyricism. She is in no way, "garage," which is OK, but it doesn't speak to Golightly's sophistication and originality with her obvious sources. How does she allow the genres she plays in such impact on her work while being completely original is a constant source of fascination when I listen to Holly Golightly. My only reason for the 4 stars is that Golightly's use of her voice is too unrelentingly understated. That works well enough sometimes, but I've heard her open to more resonant volume and it's beautiful, always leaves me wanting more. Anyway, to sit at night and stare into the fire with Main Attraction on is one great experience.
