5.0 out of 5 stars Genius , never did get the props they deserved, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
Pete Rock and CL are the most slept on group that were out in the early 90's . Pete's production style is very unique and authentic , you know the horns and bass . I also rank CL in the top ten all-time rap vocalist . A word to the wise is get their three albums , you won't be disappointed .

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Season The Pot Without The Main Ingredient (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5.0 stars), September 1, 2007
By Chandler "Infamous" (Atlanta (College Park), Georgia) - See all my reviews

I don't know what I can add to the reviews that cannot have already have been said. Pete Rock and CL are one of the best duo's in hip hop, there is no question about that. The follow up to their classic album Mecca and the Soul Brother with this beautiful masterpiece The Main Ingreedient. To be very honest, I like this album than the previous one. Pete Rock's production here is outstanding, and more laid back here. He doesn't use the horns as much (if any) on this album, like he did on the previous as well. "I Get Physical" and "It's On You" are some of the great production that is on this album. You can tell by listening that Pete has evolved as a producer over the two year period.

As for CL, he still great around the vocals. The the editorial reviewer mentioned, it's not easy for him to match Pete's production, but CL does his thing with very little or no problems. He flows freely and easily over the production which I like as well. "In The House" is excellent on the lyrical side. Another is "Take You There" his rhymes works well over the correct production. "Get On The Mic" is another easy stand out (How did I know they were going to spin that Biz Markie sample as the hook?). Pete Rock takes over the mic on some songs as well, mostly on his solo song "Escape" and "Worldwide" featuring Grap Lova.

This album is great to listen to. It has as a more laid back atmosphere to listen to. As I said earlier, I like this one better than the first full length LP. If you're looking for some easy vibing music from the '94 era, go ahead and pick this up, if you haven't already. I'm pretty sure that everyone was dissapointed when they split up back in '95, and Pete Rock persued a solo career, as well as CL making a few songs over a period of time, and comeback album last year. At the cheap price it is right now, I recommend you add this to your collection. Peace!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Criminally Slept On {5 Stars}, February 27, 2007
By Norfeest "Yes Yes Y'all" (Washington DC USA) - See all my reviews

I'll go ahead and state the obvious: Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth never made a bad album. Period. They could probably come back from their 13 year hiatus and drop another classic as far as I'm concerned. The thing that makes this album great is 1) Pete Rock's immaculate production and 2) C.L.'s flow. You can't say that any of their albums sound like someone elses. CL has a unique format and interesting wordplay that commands attention. Pete Rock is easily one of the top 5 producers in hip hop history and his ear for jazz samples is unmatched to this day. They blend their talents on this album and the songs bleed into each other perfectly. Did I mention how P.R. drops snippets between tracks? Forget about it. He drops just enough to make you crave and come back for more. If you're not instantly feeling this album, your heart isn't beating.

Flaws? Forget about it. Moving on...

The Main Ingredient is the last release from the duo known as Pete Rock & CL Smooth. That should be reason enough for you to get this. If that's not enough, know that Pete Rock's production is on point and CL Smooth's unique flow and wordplay make for one of the smoothest/laid back rap albums you'll ever hear. This is one of those rap albums that hits you in a way that makes you remember exactly what you're doing and where you were when you heard it for the first time. Anything less than 5 stars for this album borders on blasphemous. I recommend making this album a collection cornerstone.

Standout Tracks: I Got A Love (My Favorite), In The House, Sun Won't Come Out, Carmel City....hell, every track on this album is top notch and they all stand out.
