5.0 out of 5 stars Maine Gazetteer
This goes for any of the gazetters. These books are indispensable. I have them for many states and refer to them constantly when traveling. I photograph lighthouses and landscapes. They have the lighthouses marked and many tiny roads. I've used the one in Northern California to navigate through the deep forests on logging roads to get to the ocean and never have had an...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not truly Topo
I've lived in Maine for much of my life and have always relied heavily on the Maine Atlas. At any given time, I have several copies around the house and in various vehicles.

That's not to say that I'm entirely satisfied with it, however. It's just that there's really aren't many alternatives to choose from in Maine (DeLorme's headquarters, incidentally). The...

This goes for any of the gazetters. These books are indispensable. I have them for many states and refer to them constantly when traveling. I photograph lighthouses and landscapes. They have the lighthouses marked and many tiny roads. I've used the one in Northern California to navigate through the deep forests on logging roads to get to the ocean and never have had an error. If I find myself in error it has always been my mistake in reading the map not the map. They are the perfect detail for the size package. I also use the Topo 4.0 Wow! I don't carry a laptop in the field though.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only up to date road reference to Maine, May 1, 2000
By A Customer
If you are visiting Maine and want to explore, this is the only reference possible. It is updated every year to show washed out roads, backwoods detours and detail that is essential to getting in and out of the Northern Wilderness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maine Bible, December 27, 2003
The Maine Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme should also be known as "The Maine Bible." Every Mainer should own one. All too often I've tried those web sites that are supposed to give you driving directions, and inevitably they give me an error message saying "that location was not found" when I try to get directions to places in rural Maine. You'll never have to worry about that with the Gazetteer. Every Maine city, town, village or plantation is listed in this book, no matter how obscure it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite MUST HAVE for any Maine traveler, September 25, 2005

We bought this atlas a few weeks before a two week Maine vacation we had planned. We had an idea of a few different places we were going to visit and didn't want to get lost along the way.

When we got there however, we realized how valuable this atlas actually is. We traveled all over the state, from interstate to highway to dirt roads.

The scale of the maps is absolutely amazing. There's no way you can get lost with this bad boy and you can explore every nook and cranny of Maine.

Well worth the money and then some.

5.0 out of 5 stars The must-have book when reading Thoreau's writings on the Ma, July 22, 1999
This review is from: Maine Atlas and Gazetteer (Maine Atlas & Gazetteer) (Paperback)
The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer is a must-have book if you are going to accompany Henry David Thoreau on his three trips through the Maine woods during the nineteenth century. This way, I was there following the Penobscot , crossing streams, travelling large and small ponds, going up falls and down, stopping at tiny 'villages." This is really an exciting trip. Wish I could have been there back then.

5.0 out of 5 stars huge help on the road, November 4, 2006

I strongly recommend this product for anyone visiting Maine and unfamiliar with roads and highways in that state. We found the Atlas very helpful in finding the shortest routes and alternate routes over traffic-clogged route 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest map you can buy., June 29, 2008

I've been camping in Maine for a few weeks... Mainers expect you to have one of these. They say "get out your DeLorme's" not "do you have a map?" Some people I've met have pointed me to the right page without looking at the back.

The details in this atlas are great! All of Maine's public reserve land and campground are clearly marked. If you are trying to do some real camping in some remote areas, get this map. This is a must if you are going to be doing anything outdoors in ME. I never thought I'd say a map is fun to read.
