This book is tribute to the love of the land - land that was owned and culivated by the Nearings (The Good Life). It shows in pictures the beauty of the Maine coast land, and what honest labor can bring. It also documents local culture and custom to give a flavor for the year-round life in a harsh winter and short but intense summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dreamer's Handbook August 9, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you've ever dreamed about going back to the land, and want to do it in style, this is the book for you. Beautiful photos of inspirational gardens, projects and life on the outskirts of a small Maine town (one of the authors was a well known photographer). This couple purchased famous "back-to-the-landers" Helen and Scott Nearings farm and recreated it as their own using the Nearing's life as inspiration. I gave this book to my wife for our 4th anniversary knowing full well that it would create a lot of work for me...Specifically she would want us to make dried flower wreaths, or build a log sauna, or make a stone fence around our garden and I would be doing much of the work! I enjoyed the snippets of community life as well. And there are some great recipes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and amazing March 31, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the story of two families that have created a beautiful, sustainable-living farm in Maine. For those
in awe of the geography of Maine, the photographs will draw you in to every little nook and cranny, and then completely blow you away. Creativity and perseverance are on every page. I read about this book on a blog and
ordered it immediately. I have not been disappointed. I'm savoring it and enjoying every page and change of
season that the occupants tackle. Filled with heirloom tomatoes, lobsters, and blueberries, there's something
here for everyone. More than a picture album, the story of making a home is powerful.
