Book Description

Save a bundle series August 1993
For portable computer owners who cringe at the thought of troubleshooting their own equipment, this book offers a comprehensive overview of the tools and techniques used to serve today's notebook, palmtop and pen computers. The book gives easy-to-follow, low-tech descriptions of components and test instruments, precise service guidelines and easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions for performing routine maintenance and basic repairs. All portable computer systems are covered, with respect to batteries; displays; input devices; power supplies; hard and floppy drives and logic boards.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Notice: this book is not for the keyboard challenged or digitally impaired! Since Bigelow is concerned with how to maintain portable microcomputers, some of the text gets a little technical. But if one depends on a laptop or another of the highly portable little computers Bigelow describes, it could be an invaluable maintenance and repair resource. It even includes a bibliography, which is fairly rare in a how-to. Another commendable asset is the illustrative material. Schematics and cutaways of wiring and electronic gadgets can be confusing and reminiscent of Escher prints, but these illustrations are relatively uncluttered and are accompanaied by more-than-adequate explanatory notes. Assuming one has the proper tools and test instruments, which are presented in one chapter, the book enables simple maintenance and troubleshooting while avoiding costly downtime. To PC users who must travel for their work, its potential value is great. Mike Tribby

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice book if you have a pre-1992 notebook., February 15, 1998
By A Customer
This book would only be of value to someone who owns a pre-1992 laptop Computer. Although the author does impart some usefull information, you would have to be a member of MENSA, and have a degree in electronics to make use of the book. Mr. Bigelow has done a tremendous service writing this book, unfortunetly, it is of little use to the average user. Too bad, too, because this a subject in dire need of more Information. If you work on computers Like I do, it might be a good idea to have a copy around for reference.
