Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-Corrigan and Williams helped create a grassroots peace movement in Ireland. They met in August 1976, shortly after Corrigan's niece and two nephews were killed as a result of sectarian violence. They collected signatures on petitions calling for a halt to the violence, organized and spoke at peace rallies all over Ireland and Europe, and started a group called the Peace People. They were awarded the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts. Written in clear prose, this volume chronicles the events that brought these two women "to mobilize hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world to work toward an end to the violence in Northern Ireland." Sidebars provide additional background on the Potato Famine, Irish Americans, "Bloody Sunday," and the history of the Nobel Peace Prize. Small, often dark or grainy black-and-white photos are scattered throughout. Unfamiliar terms are explained in context as well as in a brief glossary. While the book may be useful for reports, it is not likely that it will have a wide audience.
