Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS—Maisy is confident and acquainted with the routines of preschool. She clearly has no separation issues. She hangs up her coat, joins in making music, listens to a story, and so on. Throughout the day, the young mouse and her friends have a good time. As always, Cousins's bright color illustrations are simple and appealing. The solid black lines around objects help them to stand out on the page, drawing children's attention. Reassuring and fun.—Susan E. Murray, Glendale Public Library, AZ

I bought several books to introduce the concept of preschool to my 2 1/2 yr old son before his first day. This was by far the best for his age. It is a simple, straightforward and positive intro to preschool activities. Some of the other books either seemed negative (e.g. child crying bc they didn't want to be at school) or too mature - more for older toddler/Kindergarten-aged school experience.

My son has been asking to read this book by name and saying he wants to see Maisy at Preschool. Hopefully it will do the trick when he actually attends his first day!

One of the few books that doesn't present a "scary" or "I miss mommy" side to preschool. It just details out the day and talks about how much fun Maisy and her friends have. It was exactly what I was looking for. This was our first Maisy book and I'm thrilled with it, my daughter requests it all the time.

This is our first "Maisy" book and I've been very happy with it! I wanted a book about starting preschool that was positive in tone (not about being scared or lonely) and gave a basic picture of things that happen at school. Starts off something like, "Today is a great day for Maisy! She's going to preschool." I also like that it's not specifically about her FIRST DAY at school, but rather could be any day at preschool. The story is simple but shows all kinds of fun things that happen at school and ends with the school day ending. It also doesn't show the parents at all, which I think is nice for people with alternate pick-up or drop-off arrangements (i.e. nannies, grandparents, etc). Just perfect.

We got this along with My Preschool to prepare my daughter for preschool. She prefers the My Preschool book but I'm still rating this highly because I think it's ideal for a slightly younger audience. My daughter is older for her grade (she's almost 4 and just started 3's preschool, and has the attention for longer books), I think the Maisy book would be better for a younger 3 year old or even an older 2 year old who might be going to "school" (daycare). The Maisy book goes through things that many kids might do in a typical day at school. As one other reviewer pointed out, I liked that it wasn't specifically about the first day of school and might be interesting for her to read throughout the year.

I bought this and a few other books to help prepare my 2-1/2 yr. son for preschool. It was the least helpful as the author did not address parents leaving/returning at all.

Seems like the best massively-available get-ready-for-preschool! book on the market. My daughter instantly grew to know all the characters, thinks their day sounds like fun, and seems excited about actually going to preschool in the fall. We'll see then how well it prepared her!

Love this book about preschool. It was the only one I found that didn't talk about being anxious or scared. My 3 year old wasn't nervous about starting school so I didn't want to get him a book that might make him think there is something to be nervous about. This is great for that

There is something about Maisy that just connects with my 3 year old - she loves all the Maisy books we've gotten. This is a nice pre-school book for little ones to teach them about what they will do all day. It takes you through a day of preschool with Maisy. I do think the best Preschool book is Daniel Tiger Daniel Goes to Preschool because it touches on missing your parent's and this one doesn't but I am really happy we have this one.
