Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

It's one of those unwritten laws of life: run a bath, and the doorbell rings. For Maisy the mouse, bathtime looks like it may never happen. She runs the water, puts in some bubbles, drops in her rubber ducky, and... "Ding, Dong!" Maisy's friend Tallulah the duck is at the door, tennis racket in wing, wanting to play. Maisy asks her to come back later. But as soon as Maisy undresses and pops in her bubbly bath, the doorbell rings for a second time. It's Tallulah, coming to play again! And this time, it looks like Tallulah has a sure-fire plan to guarantee playtime with her friend. Soon, both Maisy and Tallulah are splashing and playing in the bath together.

Maisy is a big favorite among young readers everywhere. Lucy Cousins's sweet stories of this endearing mouse and her friends celebrate the simple pleasures of life: Maisy Goes to Bed and Happy Birthday Maisy. Thick black lettering and boldly outlined, brightly colored illustrations make this a tremendously appealing tale for early readers. From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Maisy's fans will not be disappointed by either of these titles. In Bus, a simple concept book, the little mouse proves to be a very responsible driver. At each of the first four stops, she picks up an animal friend. At the fifth, she drops them all off, making sure she doesn't leave anyone behind. While Maisy Takes a Bath, Tallulah, a chicken, impatiently waits for her friend to come out and play. Eventually, she hops right into the tub with Maisy. The protagonist has a charming personality with plenty of sparkle. Both books feature bright colors; clearly defined, recognizable objects; and lots of repetition. Great fun for storytimes and lap sharing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for All Maisy Fans, November 1, 2009

This review is from: Maisy Takes a Bath (Paperback)
I got this book for my daughter because she has enjoyed the other Maisy books. The bright colors and graphic drawings seem to really get her attention.

However, I was kind of weirded out by the storyline for this one. I am not super conservative or anything but the fact that Maisie answered the door in her towel bothered me. Plus, Maisy answers the door each time, not her mom or dad. Then, her friend runs upstairs and jumps in the tub with her. I just feel like this book wasn't very thought out and may reinforce reckless behavior.

I understand the difference between a children's book and real life but the Maisy books' express mission is to teach kids about the world around them and how to behave in it, and I just think this book fails on that point. But we have really enjoyed the other Maisy books and will buy other ones. This one just made me a little uncomfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maisy Mania, February 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Maisy Takes a Bath (Hardcover)
We were given this book as a hand me down in a bag of about 50 others. This is my 22 month old's favorite of them all and I'm here to buy more Maisy books. She can't wait until the end when Tallulah jumps in the tub so she can say "no no!" Last night I had to read it to her 3 times in a row! She loves it but I need some variety! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Maisy's a favourite in our home, June 22, 2000
By
MRS J R OONG (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maisy Takes a Bath (Hardcover)
Our two-year-old daughter squeals with delight simply at the mention of Maisy's name. She therefore enjoys nothing more than sitting quietly (as quietly as a two-year-old can) while we read about Maisy.

She repeats several of the words after me and guesses who's calling at the door for Maisy this time. My daughter identifies with Maisy in having a bubble bath and sharing her bath (i.e. play) time with her friends and cousins.

I have seen this book in the cartoon version on television, but find it it better to read, as we can go at our own pace. My daughter often turns back the pages, to read them over again, before we get to the end of the book and "the end".

We highly recommend this book to parents and kids alike.
