This review is from: Maitland's Reply (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
"Maitland's Reply" is the third in a superb series featuring ex-undercover Chicago narcotics cop, fulltime co-owner of a very upscale north lake shore antiques shop, and part-time bounty hunter Evan Maitland. Maitland's path crosses Frank Chang's, an enforcer or Red Pole in the White Lotus Triad of New York City when Chang is sent into Chicago along with two members of the rival Wu-Chai Triad from San Francisco to carry out two assassinations and bring the Chicago triad and its heroin industry back into line.
When one of the killings goes very wrong and draws Maitland's antique business parner, Bianca Garibaldi, into a life and death proposition, Maitland is forced into a very intriguing partnership with Chang. The book features not only the fully drawn action figures of Maitland and the assassins, but also the characters of Chicago police officers who are involved with Maitland from being a lover with some regrets to being vengeful enemies who believe Maitland was on the take and should have lost more than his police shield. The city of Chicago plays a prominent role as the story sweeps from Ravinia and Highland Park, the Loop into the westside. The detail on the functioning of the triads is revelatory.Saving face is more important than money as this book and Connelly's "Nine Dragons" illustrate. Here's hoping there's more Maitland where this came from. |
