The latest entry in Voyageur Press' Majestic series focuses on the common deer of the West. Named by William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) for its enormous ears, this larger cousin of the more familiar whitetail is portrayed as the finest game animal in its range. The fact that this species inhabits some of the most beautiful country in the West, from deserts to temperate rain forests, adds to its appeal. Four chapters combine magnificent photographs of mule deer with the editors' choice of the best tales of mule-deer hunting from seven outdoor writers. The stories range from straightforward to humorous, and in the era from 1897 to the 1980s. The photographs illustrating the stories are for the most part superb, featuring trophy buck deer, as would be expected in a book about hunting (though a doe or young spike buck occasionally sneaks in). The quality of the illustrations, and their meshing with the text, recommends this homage to mule deer for libraries with large collections on natural history or hunting. Nancy Bent

Good condition as expected (used), purchased for husband so not sure of how appreciated was content of book. Seemed to be good investment for hobby hunter interested in mule-deer hunter
