Biography

Pop stardom has, for many years, attuned listeners to the arrival of shining new faces filled with vital new ideas, to which attention must be paid. Instantly. Briefly, for the most part. It says here that there is another path, at least if what one cares about is music, and not celebrity. The steady lines in Buddy Miller’s face, the passions which abide within his voice, and the ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Buddy's most ambitious album ever March 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I didn't like parts of this album at all the first time I listened to it. Indeed, more than once I found myself thinking "what was he thinking?" With repeated listenings, however, I started to get it.

This album is unlike anything Buddy has done before. It is far and away the most ambitious album he has undertaken in his entire career.

Yes, some of the usual suspects show up (Ann McCrary, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lee Ann Womack, Emmylou Harris and, of course, Julie.

But then there's a bunch of folks you wouldn't expect. First, you've got Bill Frisell (one of jazz's pre-eminent guitarists whose musical roots are very broad and very deep), Marc Ribot (another world-class guitarist whose past work has been labeled no wave, free jazz and Cuban among other things - trust me, Marc doesn't fit in a box any more than Bill does), and Greg Leisz (who plays just about anything with strings exceptionally well). [Greg's steel guitar will make your skin crawl it's so good] Together with Buddy, these four men constitute the Majestic Silver Strings, which will play as a group at the Grammy Museum in LA on Thursday, March 10th (only show scheduled that I know of). Add in Chocolate Genius, a floating member group centered on Marc Anthony Thompson, a New York-based singer/songwriter, and you've got a heck of a mix.

The album (the promo copy I have been listening to) states that it is "Buddy's re-imagination of classic country songs, loaded with guitars, atmosphere, and attitude." That's about as apt a one-line description as you're likely to find. That's also why there's a bit of culture shock at first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another creative wonder from Buddy March 21, 2011
By ArtGuy
Format:Audio CD
Buddy Miller's new album "Majestic Silver Strings" is worth it all if only for the hauntingly beautiful "That's the Way Love Goes", the head twisting redo of "Dang Me", the slightly creepy "Meds" and the deeply comforting song I've listened to 4, 5 and 6 times in a row, "God's Wing'ed Horse." Different from his other albums in it's direction, Buddy maintains his integrity and superb artistry. He doesn't flinch from taking musical risks. That's why I keep coming back.

5.0 out of 5 stars five stars (with an asterisk) March 17, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was excited to hear that my two guitar heros, Bill Frisell and Buddy Miller had recorded something together. This is something I'd wanted to hear since first hearing Buddy back up Emmylou Harris years ago. I've been a big fan of both he and his wife's music for years. They produce better music in their home than the rest of Nashville can in the fanciest studios in town. As far as Bill Frisell is concerned, I was lucky enough to be given a cd of his back in the early 90's and realized I had found gold.I think I have bought every release since then. He is an inspiration to any musician and an example of how to succeed by being true to yourself.
The only fault i find with the cd, "Majestic Silver Strings" is the generosity of Buddy Miller. He is happy to let others take the lead. This isn't always a good idea. As a fan of Marc Ribot it pains me to say that this cd suffers from a tad too much of his input. While I love the song "meds"as well as his excellent playing throughout the cd, I could have done without his rather bland reading of
"the bars of the prison", a song originally written in Spanish that seems to lose something in this translation.I also love the new take on the Roger Miller classic "dang me", which many will see as blasphemy. On the whole, the album is nearly perfect. I have listened to it many times now and only wish there was a little more of Buddy and Bill on it. Maybe next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd give it 10 stars if allowed December 11, 2011
Format:Audio CD
It's a country record but it's not. It's a Buddy Miller album but it's not.
This is one of the best records of 2011 irrespective of musical genre made by a group of America's finest musicians the old fashioned way, by hand and heart.
Try it, you'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice May 16, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I thought this was a great CD. Definately not a
Buddy Miller solo record, but a very nice project with some solid musicians and wonderful guest singers. Very non traditional takes on some classic songs, and a few new oddities. Hey, with Buddy, you can't go wrong. And although this wasn't really a solo Buddy record, it has his feel and stamp all over it. Highly reccommended.
