Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

". . . should appeal to students of history, interior design, and architecture as well as to travelers to Charleston. . . . nice complement to any U.S. travel or history collection." -Library Journal In Colonial Williamsburg, a step into the Historic Area means a step back in time. Visitors enter the world of eighteenth-century colonial America, brought to life by people portraying the residents of the period. Take a trip with us inside Colonial Williamsburg's beautifully re-created and restored buildings, including the Governor's Palace (ca. 1706-1722), Bruton Parish Church (ca. 1712-1715), and the Capitol (ca. 1701-1705). In 1926 the Reverend Dr. W. A. R. Goodwin persuaded philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr., to restore Williamsburg, the colonial capital of Virginia. Today, Colonial Williamsburg is the largest and oldest living history museum in the world, a fully restored town complete with costumed interpreters, wagons, carriages, and livestock. At the Capitol, Raleigh Tavern, Governor's Palace, and Magazine, visitors hear how Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and other patriots rallied Virginians to the Revolutionary cause and helped lead the thirteen colonies to independence. At trade sites, skilled tradespeople use eighteenth-century methods to make guns, hammer silver, cast brass, and sew garments. Throughout the Historic Area, interpreters bring to life the men, women, and children, white and black, free and enslaved, who lived and worked in colonial Williamsburg. Their efforts, and those of countless individuals behind the scenes at the nonprofit Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, ensure that every visitor experiences the majesty of Colonial Williamsburg. This is the eighth volume in Pelican's Majesty series. Peter Beney, a book photographer since 1952, has authored two previous books in Pelican's Majesty series: The Majesty of Savannah and The Majesty of Charleston. Front of jacket: The front gate of the Governor's Palace. Back of jacket: A memorial garden on the campus of the College of William and Mary.
