Book Description

February 28, 1999 1565541588 978-1565541580 2
Natchez, Mississippi, attracts thousands of visitors annually. One look through these pages and it is easy to see why. Beautiful exterior shots, rare interior photographs, and moving descriptions capture the essence of one of the largest and best-preserved collections of antebellum architecture in the country. Natchez truly is a living museum. King's Tavern, circa 1789, is believed to be the oldest building in Natchez and still operates as a tavern and restaurant. The stately Greek Revival Stanton Hall occupies an entire city block and is considered one of America's finest house museums. Longwood, the largest octagonal house in the country, stands unfinished today because Northern workers stopped in their tracks and left for home at the outbreak of the Civil War. For those fortunate enough to experience this bastion of the Old South or for those who hope to visit one day, The Majesty of Natchez makes the perfect memento or gift book. It presents the grandeur of this quintessential Southern town in all its radiant splendor. Pelican's acclaimed Majesty Architecture Series takes detailed looks at the unique architecture of historic cities and geographic areas throughout the South. The nine titles currently in the ever-growing series include Colonial Williamsburg (hc/pb), Savannah , and New Orleans (hc/pb).

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is really little, March 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Majesty of Natchez, The (Majesty Architecture) (Hardcover)
Having gotten back from Natchez, I ordered this for my wife as a momento. It is, like my wife, really small. It is, again like her, very colorful. However, unlike her, it is unsuitable to the topic it tries to tackle. Too much ground is covered, too few pictures that are too small, no real text, yadda yadda. Don't waste your money, save up for a big coffee table book on Natchez. Better yet, go see the town, it's incredible (like my wife).

5.0 out of 5 stars Natchez uncovered, November 9, 2010
This review is from: Majesty of Natchez, The (Majesty Architecture) (Hardcover)
I bought this book two years ago after a vacation to Natchez. I wish I had purchased and read it first because I would have had a lot more information on the old homes. I found the book very interesting giving a brief history of each home. I would recommend that anyone who is planning on visiting Natchez get this book and read it first. I missed choosing appropriate homes to visit because I only had the information from the City of Natchez tours of plantations of which there were many wonderful ones to choose from, I could have spent a month there.

i love this series of books. it is sometimes hard to find visitor information on some of the "off the beaten path" plantation homes and such. this gives you some idea of what to look for. thanks!!
