An inspiring and accurate novel of Hatshepsut!,
By Elena (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: His Majesty, Queen Hatsheput (Library Binding)
This book is very good although it may be a little hard for younger audiences to read. The Egyptian vocabulary and traditions may be a little confusing. If you get stuck on an Egyptian word, person, or place refer to the vocabulary list at the end of the book. Their it will tell you it's meaning and should help you along with the book. Other reviewers said that this book was boring and yes, it might be boring to readers who know nothing about Hathshepsut or are not interested in Egyptian history. I reccomend reading 'Hatshepsut, His Majesty, Herself' by Catherine M. Andronik and Joseph Daniel Fiedler {illustrator} which is a short straight forward history about Hatshepsut that basicly sums up her life and accomplishments before tackling this book. Anyways this book is very interesting. It provides a lot of history which makes the book even more interesting. You'll love this book as long as you read it with a poisitive notion

...I love ancient Egypt, fact and fiction, and this book is wonderful for any history buff. I found it very exciting, beautifully written, and it described the atmosphere of Hatshepsut's time with rich clarity. Let me tell you, I read this book in sixth grade and loved it, and even now, years later, it is still a fabulously satisfying read. ...

Some other reviewers considered this book boring, but they must a)not have a very good grasp of egyptian history, b)have a complete lack of interest in Egypt, c) be sans a diverse vocabulary. :) I love ancient Egypt, fact and fiction, and this book is wonderful for any history buff. I found it very exciting, beautifully written, and it described the atmosphere of Hatshepsut's time with rich clarity. Let me tell you, I read this book in sixth grade and loved it, and even now, years later, it is still a fabulously satisfying read. So boo yah, and go borrow/steal:)/buy His Majesty, Queen Hatshepsut!!!

It's a good book,

I read this book when I was in sixth grade. I found most of it fascinating. Highly romantisized, yet based on historical knowledge, it developes in the reader's mind the possible world of one of Egypt's greatest rulers. Albeit the opening is slow, it is actually very well written with a strong main character and equally strong antagonist. Yeah, I liked the love story part of it too, and where she's complaining about how much she hates her husband, his other wife, and their son.

I wanted to like this book, but it was not to be. The historical background is woven nicely into the book but the narrative suffers. The story/history is told in an awkward present tense which does not flow well or engage the reader as it should. The verbage has occasional bursts of vivid description which show promise, but the main character seems to suffer an identity crisis. She alternates from royalty to ordinary with unusual choices in her mode of expression.
I shall continue to look for a good, well-written, engaging book about Hatshepsut for our family. This one will not do. The three stars are for the quality of the historical backdrop.

We have came to a conclusion that the vocabulary was too difficult for 6th grade level. Also,it was boring at some parts because it didn't have action or interesting facts. We also thought it was hard too understand the Egyptian customs. We liked this book because it gave us information about Egyptian culture. We would recommend this book to 8th and 9th graders because of the vocabulary.

We would not recommend the book: His Majesty Queen Hatshepsut to read aloud, but other wise it might be alright. The vocabulary was hard and the story was diffucult to follow when somebody was reading out loud. This book seemed boring because of all the Ancient Egyptian Society facts. We might recommend this book for an older age group such as 8th or 9th grade or someone who likes to read about history. It is not that much fun for a 6th grader to read.

Good read aloud book for a class,

I read this book last year to my 5th grade Waldorf School class during our study of ancient Egypt. The class loved it. They were engaged and since I read it I was able to answer their questions. It really enlivened our trip to the Met when we sat in a gallery full of her images.

As a group we would recommend this book for 7 graders+ because it has hard words to understand. The book has a good plot but in the first half of the book nothing really happened. If you get this book for a class buy one for everyone because it's easier to understand the vocabulary. You can a learn lot of new vocabulary and a lot about Ancient Egypt.

Our group grades His Majesty, Queen Hatshepsut 2 stars out of 5. The book gives good information, however, it skipped around a lot. It's more of a history book than a regular story book.
