Book Description

August 2006
Marching to the beat of a different drum...

Tired of the beauty-pagean circuit, Virginia Sauter tosses her tiara, pierces her nose, and auditions for the most unlikely of roles -- drum major of the high school marching band.

Virginia wins, but is forced to share the title with Drew, whose family has held the position for generations. Sure, Drew is hot, but because of his superior attitude, he and Virginia are constantly arguing. That is, until they share more than just their half-time salute...

But as the drum major's heated competition turns to sizzling romance, explosive rumors threaten everything -- including the band's success. Love seemed to be a sure hit, but Virginia and Drew may be marching straight into disaster.

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up–Virginia Sauter throws in her tiara, pierces her nose, and quits the beauty-pageant circuit to try out to become drum major at her high school. Winning is bittersweet when she must share the title with Drew, whose family members have held the position for generations. Despite the fact that he is competitive and dating one of the Evil Twins, Tracey or Cacey (even he isnt sure which one), Virginia thinks that he is hot. To complicate matters further, the drum-major role isnt what she envisioned it to be and she begins to believe that she made a big mistake. The protagonist is also dealing with the aftermath of her fathers extramarital affair; while her mother has forgiven him, Virginia cannot. However, the issues never get in the way of this entertaining story. The characters voices are real, and situations are dealt with in a believable way. Readers looking for romance and a few laughs wont be disappointed.–Angela M. Boccuzzi-Reichert, Merton Williams Middle School, Hilton, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars A Trifecta of a book!, August 1, 2006
MAJOR CRUSH has everything you could want in a book: Great characters, a fast paced, multifaceted plot, and great humor. I found myself laughing out loud at a few spots, and then having to explain to those sitting near me why I had laughed.

MAJOR CRUSH features a beauty pageant queen who just became the first girl drum major-- much to the chagrin of Drew, who now has to share the position with her. Add in a little romantic tension, some amazing secondary characters, and a secret or two, and you'll be hooked on Jennifer Echol's debut novel.

Five stars. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you feel the heat-- on the field and off, August 4, 2006
In her YA debut Jennifer Echols hits all the right notes, if you'll forgive the pun, with her story of Virginia and Drew and why they just can't get along. Then can.

What makes this story work is the obvious love that Jennifer has for her subject in marching bands and the depth that she gives each of the main characters. They're inherently nice kids, but at the same time aren't portrayed as simple, two-dimensional cardboard cutouts. Each of the main characters has a difficult, potentially life-changing issue they're dealing with and they find that in each other, they have a confidante and a friend.

Can't wait for your encore, Jennifer!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the cutest books I've read, April 24, 2010

Virginia Sauter, a once beauty pageant participant, leaves the dresses, gets her nose pierced, and becomes drum major at her school. Let me rephrase that for you: Virginia is drum major along with Drew. 1)Virginia is the first girl drum major, ever, 2) Drew hates her (and of course Virginia "hates" him too even though she has a major crush on him) and 3) people say that Virginia slept with the band director just to get the position. So overall, things aren't looking up for Virginia. And things aren't looking up for the band either, due to their first performance. Can Virginia and Drew both pull it together for the sake of the band? And will they end up falling for eachother?

Another Hate/Love story, gotta love them. I know I do. Virginia is such a likeable character. She doesn't take anything from anyone. She back talks to Drew when he's mean to her (which turns out to be a lot)-she's just very strong.

Jennifer Echols is an amazing writer and her writing has so much laugh out loud quality. Her characters are rediculously embarassing and overall realistic. This is a must read. You'll read it once and then come back to it again and again because it's that entertaining.

Will I reread it?
Now speaking of this book, I do-right now! Maybe I'll grab my Kindle and get reading!
