A Trifecta of a book!,
By
This review is from: Major Crush (Romantic Comedies (Mass Market)) (Mass Market Paperback)
MAJOR CRUSH has everything you could want in a book: Great characters, a fast paced, multifaceted plot, and great humor. I found myself laughing out loud at a few spots, and then having to explain to those sitting near me why I had laughed.
MAJOR CRUSH features a beauty pageant queen who just became the first girl drum major-- much to the chagrin of Drew, who now has to share the position with her. Add in a little romantic tension, some amazing secondary characters, and a secret or two, and you'll be hooked on Jennifer Echol's debut novel. Five stars. :-)

In her YA debut Jennifer Echols hits all the right notes, if you'll forgive the pun, with her story of Virginia and Drew and why they just can't get along. Then can.
What makes this story work is the obvious love that Jennifer has for her subject in marching bands and the depth that she gives each of the main characters. They're inherently nice kids, but at the same time aren't portrayed as simple, two-dimensional cardboard cutouts. Each of the main characters has a difficult, potentially life-changing issue they're dealing with and they find that in each other, they have a confidante and a friend. Can't wait for your encore, Jennifer!

One of the cutest books I've read,

This review is from: Major Crush (Romantic Comedies (Mass Market)) (Mass Market Paperback)
Virginia Sauter, a once beauty pageant participant, leaves the dresses, gets her nose pierced, and becomes drum major at her school. Let me rephrase that for you: Virginia is drum major along with Drew. 1)Virginia is the first girl drum major, ever, 2) Drew hates her (and of course Virginia "hates" him too even though she has a major crush on him) and 3) people say that Virginia slept with the band director just to get the position. So overall, things aren't looking up for Virginia. And things aren't looking up for the band either, due to their first performance. Can Virginia and Drew both pull it together for the sake of the band? And will they end up falling for eachother?
Another Hate/Love story, gotta love them. I know I do. Virginia is such a likeable character. She doesn't take anything from anyone. She back talks to Drew when he's mean to her (which turns out to be a lot)-she's just very strong. Jennifer Echols is an amazing writer and her writing has so much laugh out loud quality. Her characters are rediculously embarassing and overall realistic. This is a must read. You'll read it once and then come back to it again and again because it's that entertaining. Will I reread it? Now speaking of this book, I do-right now! Maybe I'll grab my Kindle and get reading!

So basically, I picked up this book after I read The Boys Next Door which is also by Jennifer Echols. Now, I think we all know that nothing can compare to that book. This book, however, is not too far behind. We are introduced to Virginia who just so happens to be one of the new drum mojors. Along side of Drew of course. Now, I know what you are all saying... JUST GET TOGETHER!! But the story isn't like that. Drew is one of -- no, Drew is THE most popular guy at school and when it comes to girls, he can probably get which ever the one he chooses.
Then Virginia comes in. Virginia use to be the all-too beautiful beauty-pageant girl who never thought twice about adding on ninety layers of make-up. But now things have changed. A dark secret has kept her in the dark and has changed her a lot. Now the beauty has peirced her nose, stopped wearing shoes and got the position as drum major along side of Drew. Virginia always had a crush on Drew, and when the new band teacher comes, he makes sure to let each other know how important they each are to the band. Even if he shows them in ways that they don't always like. You can tell that a romance begins once the two start hanging out together. But as soon as it starts, it's sure to stop. The new band teacher had let the secret slip that it was Virginia who had won more votes to be the drum major. Now Drew is mad and when Virginia finds out that someone blabbed her secret, she knows that it could only have been Drew who told. Considering he was the the only one SHE told. Now this story kept me biting my nails, wondering WHEN the two would finally realize they should get together. Overall it was a good book. I HAVE read better books before (you should really check out my other reviews! =]) but this one is definatley a great book for a fun, easy read! =] So I think you should all at least TRY to read the book. And, hey, if you don't like it (yeah, right!) you could just put it down. I gave this book four stars and it really deserves it! READ THE BOOK! <3 tAyLoR Oh, and by the way, check out all my other reviews! If you like this, you should like them! =] Thanks!

Band Geeks Like No Others,

Take Virginia, ex-beauty pageant queen and current CO-drum major. Then there's Drew, farmer boy and also the CO-drum major. That means the two of them have to work together. When they hate each other? Yeah, right.
But they have to get along, and who says that won't lead anywhere? This book was great! I read it so quickly, because you really want to find out what happens next. So realistic and romantic. You can spot a little bit of mystery in there, too, involving the rumors about ... well, just read this book. It's a great romantic comedy. After reading this one and Animal Attraction by Jamie Ponti, I'm pretty eager to check out the rest of the Simon Romantic Comedies. Great book!

My oldest son is not a big reader for pleasure (and certainly not romance books), but Jennifer told us about this book and I got it for him. He could not put it down. That was the fastest I have ever seen him read any book. Some of the appeal may have been because he is in band and could relate to the story line, but I think most of it is because of Jennifer's witty and not-too-sappy writing style. I just bought Jennifer's next book The Boys Next Door, so we'll see if he digs that too!

Jennifer Echols is my favorite Simon Pulse author,

Simon Pulse Romantic Comedies are always a fun read. These books are not necessarily the best written novels but the stories are always fun and you know you will get a happy ending. I think some adult romances could take a note from these books b/c they are characterized well which is much of the battle in writing any novel since you want your characters, for the most part, to be endearing and relatable.

Cute Romantic Fun!,
This review is from: Major Crush (Romantic Comedies (Mass Market)) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a delightful quick read I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters grow to a slight degree, while interacting well with one another. The atmosphere was believable (as a person who participated in a high school band that was very different, but had similar aspects). I was rooting for the main characters, and even enjoyed their flaws making them more real. The band director made me laugh, but there were serious elements, as well, for a nice balance.
If you're looking for a quick, fun read, I suggest you pick up this book. Not only was I not disappointed, but am willing to check out other books in this series with similar ratings. (And, it's a book with a realistic band!)

not your typical band geek story,
By Alexandra (Medford, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Major Crush (Romantic Comedies (Mass Market)) (Mass Market Paperback)
Virginia is the first female drum major her high school in rural, traditional Alabama has ever had. She's also the first co-drum major. Well, one of them. The other one is Drew Morrow. Last year's band director knew what a ruckus having a female drum major would cause, so he chose two. Problem is, he took off right before school. So now the new band director doesn't know what to do with them. Drew is so infuriated about sharing his job with a girl that he barely speaks to Virginia, except to yell at her. Virginia can't stand Drew either -- sure he's hot, but that's not a right for a superiority complex. Apparently he doesn't think she's so bad-looking either, because before you know it, sparks are flying. But so are rumors. Rumors that threaten to split the couple -- and the band-- apart. Any way you look at it, it's bad, but can Drew and Virginia control it? This fun romance has surprising depth in the issues it discusses, though the reader will still be engaged in the Drew-and-Virginia situation.

One time at band camp....,
By Beautiful (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Major Crush (Romantic Comedies (Mass Market)) (Mass Market Paperback)
The story opens at the first halftime show. Drum majors Drew and Virginia cant get along, and it shows in the performance. Drew wants the position to himself, like he had it last year. Virginia has had a crush on him for 3 years and wants him to just acknowledge that she exists! Mr. Rush, the new director tells them to work it out or they'd both be fired.
Will they ever learn to get along, or will they run their award winning band into the ground? |
