5.0 out of 5 stars A big step forward for MLB 2K! March 6, 2012
By Jason
Platform for Display:PC Download|Verified Purchase
Having owned only an Xbox 360 for the last several years, I was stuck playing the MLB 2K games. I never really enjoyed them and always ended up wondering what I was missing with MLB: The Show. Last year, I finally gave in and bought a PS3 with MLB: The Show '11. I immediately noticed an improvement over the 2K series and vowed to never go back to an MLB 2K game again. Over the last year, I've gotten a decent gaming PC and gravitated away from my console games. When I noticed Amazon had MLB 2K12 for download for under $30, I figured I'd give it a shot. Boy am I glad I did!

The game is alot of fun, from pitching to hitting. The PC version looks great with crisp graphics and realistic animations, and has over 80 hours of new commentary featuring Gary Thorne, Steve Phillips & John Kruk I haven't tried online play, and doubt I ever will, so I can't speak to how well that portion of the game works, but there are plenty of other game modes to keep me occupied. Theres a cool new "MLB Today Season" mode, an improved "My Player" mode, and pitching/hitting/fielding drills just to name a few.

Will MLB: The Show '12 be the best baseball game this year? Maybe.. but it can't get much better than this, especially for half the price!

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Let me start by saying two things:

1) When one of the "new features" listed is "Tracks handpicked by SPIN magazine, featuring Cool Kids, Skrillex, The Joy Formidable, Grouplove, My Morning Jacket and more", I think it's safe to say that it's a slow year for new features. (I have never heard of any of the bands...and who buys a PC sports game because of the soundtrack anyway?)

2) If you are a PC gamer and you want a 2012 baseball game, stop reading now, go back, and hit the "order" button. It's not the greatest PC game of all time but it's certainly worth $30 if you are a PC baseball fan.

Okay, so now to the review. Let me start with the "new features". (Most of the game is very similar to last year's version, which is not necessarily a bad thing: I liked last year's version for the most part).

*MLB Today Season Mode - looks cool, but a little too early to review this since the season hasn't started. The concept is definitely exciting.

*Dynamic Tendency System - in the course of my 8-9 games played, I haven't really noticed this yet. Of course, when I'm pitching, I always try to mix it up (location, speed, pitch type) so I may not be the target audience for this.

*New Throw Meter - Ugh. So...I understand what they were trying to do: make fielding more realistic. If you field a ball on the run, do you wait a second to set your feet or do you just fling it off-balance and hope for the best? Unfortunately, the implementation is pretty hit-or-miss. In one game where the CPU was fielding for me (I was the pitcher in My Player mode), my 2nd baseman fielded a routine ground ball...went through about a 5-second exaggerated throwing animation that looked like he was trying to wrap his arms around himself 12 times...

1.0 out of 5 stars The game doesn't work now, don't buy it April 10, 2013

Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I just want consumers to know that if you're looking to get this game now, you won't be able to play it on PC!! They game has a bug where it crashes due to a conflict with the date range it expects (for Live Rosters) and the real time. I bought this game last year, thought I'd fire it up for this season. Sorry. I can't play something I paid 30 bucks for. And 2K has literally the slowest and worst customer service ever, so don't expect a fix. They don't care.

MLB Baseball 2K12 has a BUG that causes screen freezing upon startup. Since it's introduction over a year ago, it was NEVER PATCHED by the manufacturer!!! Thankfully, there's a relatively easy workaround that involves changing your system date. In Windows 7, right-click the system clock on the taskbar and select "Adjust date/time". Click "Change date and time..." and change the date to a day on which MLB games were played in 2012 - Tuesday October 2nd works. But customers shouldn't have to use workarounds!! Don't buy this game!

4.0 out of 5 stars Patch for Game Crashing June 30, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Verified Purchase
They released a patch to fix the issue with this game. If you're on Steam, it will download and install automatically. However, if you are not on Steam and bought the Disc or the Digital version from Amazon, download and install the patch.

I think this is a good game, but I am not going to do a full in depth review of it, because of this issue and because of how long it lasted, I just want to get the information out there for others to see. The crashing in this game has been fixed. I will include a link to the official game patch in the comment section of this review, because Amazon does not allow links in reviews. Please see the comments for where to download it at.

3.0 out of 5 stars MLB 2K12: The game that doesn't try very hard May 9, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Download|Verified Purchase
This game has so much potential, but it falls very short of that potential. The graphics are good and the game play is relatively realistic; a slight improvement over the '11 version of the game.

Where this game really falls short is in its portrayal of real MLB rosters. (I am a St. Louis Cardinals fan, so my examples will revolve around them, but you can rest assured you will find similar issues with your teams.)

There are no roster, player attributes or bio pic updates for this game; since it was released before the teams broke spring training, there should be some sort of updates available to ensure accuracy.

Examples:

Carlos Beltran now plays in St. Louis, but his picture shows him in a Mets hat, even though he hasn't played for them in a number of years.

Matt Carpenter - a player who made the Cardinals out of spring training and wears number 13 - was assigned the number 20 by the game which would be okay if that number was not already retired by the Cardinals as that was the number worn by the legendary Hall of Famer Lou Brock.

Lance Lynn, who is filling in as a starter while Chris Carpenter is out and is 6-0 to start the season, is given a pitch capacity which will not get him through more than five innings on the mound (and he has to be perfect to get that far).

Tony Cruz, another player who made the club out of spring training as a back up catcher, is a very clean cut guy but the game's "picture" of him shows him looking thuggish with short dreads.
