Finally! The new Holiday Friends album is out and we can listen to the studio versions of songs we've heard live for the past couple of years (or so it seems). These guys create such an upbeat sound that you might almost think that the sun shines every once in a while in their home base in Astoria, Oregon. Or perhaps they're compensating. But whatever - this is a great follow up to Chicks and really brings the band to a new level.

For those familiar with Chicks, Major Magic will be a very welcome arrival. The melodies have many similarities to those on Chicks but are generally stronger throughout the album. While many of the songs on Chicks switched from one melody to another (often multiple times within the same song), the songs on Major Magic tend to follow a more conventional format and stick with single core melodies. Instrumentation is more or less the same, although the album as a whole tends to rock a bit more, primarily because of an increased emphasis on the percussion (the reworked "Astral Observations" is a great example).

For those not familiar with the band, you're in for a treat. A quintet with a relatively equal emphasis on guitar and keys, Holiday Friends offers a faster-paced alt-rock sound that has some clear pop influences but which manages to steer well clear of the cloying sweetness found on many newer indie pop songs. I might be tempted to seed a Holiday Friends-based Pandora station with something like Sleeper Agent (or even Grouplove), who tend to rock a bit harder but who have complementary melodies and beats (in the sense that they're pretty upbeat and positive) and similarly demand that you move to the music.
