This is the fourth book in a multiauthor continuity about someone being determined to kill the governor of Texas ~ Lila Lockhart. She is about to make a public announcement when a bomb goes off trapping her in the debris but leaving her uninjured only to have her aide-de-camp discover there is another bomb all set to go off.
This book is one of those "can't put it down until the end" books. There are really two stories going on in that even once this book ends with its HEA there is still a mystery unsolved which will travel through the rest of the book in the series.
The series is going to be really interesting because it stars ex-soldiers who are no longer in the service who are working for Bart Bellows who is an eccentric Texas billionaire who is head of Corps Security and Investigation. He is determined to protect the governor and her family at all costs.
The heroine in this book is Stacy Giordano who is the governor's aide-de-camp and the mother of a son ~ Zachary ~ who suffers from Asperger's syndrome. Having had dealt with children with this syndrome I can verify that Paula does an excellent job portraying it in Zachary and it gives this book a little something extra.
Harlan McClain is an ex Marine Corps sniper and also a member of the governor's security detail. His job is to protect Stacy and the governor from whoever is trying to kill them. He learns to deal with Zachary as well. Stacy is determined to do her job, protect Zachary and the governor but not fall in love with Harlan and he is determined not to fall in love with Stacy and Zachary. But while each is determined they both fail and fall in love anyway.
Agent Harlan McClain has his target in sight. But he's not pulling the trigger. Instead his assignment is providing Stacy Giordano, the governor's aide, with security. An easy job for a former marine sniper. A solder never breaks his promise. And yet, the guarded single mother's beauty and devotion to her exceptional child soon have Harlan reshuffling his prioities. In the dead of night, in her bed, he promises to keep her and her son safe. But when an unexpected crisis arises Harlan is suddenly torn between keeping his word and taking out a killer.

I really liked the book, but the hero and heroine took a ridiculous amount of time to get together; although, the ending was worth enduring the wait. Then, when they finally did get together, the heroine's wariness reached levels that require therapy. I loved the little boy and really enjoyed the interaction between him and Harlan (hero), especially the ending commentary. Good book!
