I have read this though about 10-times; and it is a great entrance to all 7-volumes of the 'Major Writings of Nichiren Daishonin'.
I think he was enlightened, and he was a genius. His writings resolve many of the conflicts inherent in western and eastern philosophy. Try reading the very first writing: 'On Attaining Buddhahood': MWND-VOL.#1. These writing touched me very deeply.
