5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the sophomore Psych major
Outstanding book. I bought this for my daughter who, against my better judgement, chose to be a psychology major at Madison. Before I gave her the book, I read the whole thing. I'm not nearly as worried anymore. This book provides excellent overview to what can be accomplished with a Psych degree.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sparse
Huge font, wide margins, blank pages. You end up with about 70 pages of material. Perhaps this should be a manual on how to write 14 page term paper with only 7 pages of material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, April 29, 2003

This book is a quick and easy to read friend to a psychology major. The authors direct you to other resources but give you all the basics you need to know. It reads like they've actually talked to psychology majors and know our concerns.

5.0 out of 5 stars The right book to start with, May 5, 2003

I liked this book because it was short and easy to read and gave a great overview of careers, job options and graduate school. It's funny too. I had it assigned to me in a class and I didn't resell it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, Realistic, and Inspirational, January 8, 2011

I originally went to school for nursing, but realized it wasn't my passion and switched to psychology. When I made this decision, I received so much negativity from my family and others around me who were very discouraging, insisting I'd never find a job, I'd never make any money, and that my degree would be completely worthless. I moved on to find that way too many people think that way, and I even started to believe them. I did a ton of internet research, spoke to different people online, and eventually decided to stick with my guns and pursue the field I'm interested in. However, defending my choice has been absolutely exhausting.

I bought this book after seeing a review left by the mother of a psychology undergraduate who was originally unsure of her daughter's choice of major but, after reading this book, became much less worried about her child's future. For this reason, I let my mother read the book first. Please be cautioned before purchasing this book that it was written in 1998, published in 1999, and contains statistics from 1996. Because of that, average salaries are skewed quite a bit from the statistics now. I wasn't aware, at the time, that more editions have been published and the last one was released in 2008 (and I intend on purchasing that book as well), but this one still provided a very good overview on the field of psychology as well as job prospects and great advice that definitely still applies today.

I plan on getting my BA in psych and minoring in business administration. I also intend on doing one (preferably two or more) summer internship in human resources, join and be active in Women in Business (a student organization at my college), and continue learning about ways to market myself to future employers. The important thing to do when majoring in psychology (or any liberal art, for that matter), is to make the degree work for you by putting in extra effort. The basic requirements for graduation are NOT good enough. You need to set yourself apart from the other graduates competing against you for jobs. This book definitely tells you how to do that.

Overall, fabulous book!
