For this particular cd, the Spitfire Band puts on a good show. They play a lot of my favorite songs. Their arrangements are what I think the big bands should soound like. WONDERFUL
I think this kind of music is on the rebound. I hope more bands will try to start playing this kind of music. Maybe the dances of the 40's will come back. I sure hope so!
I Would Like To Recommend This Cd
50's, this is one of the greatest CDs to come out. I
can highly recomend it to anyone with big band
Rae had some really talented people working for and with him like Micky Erbe who was responsible for much of the Spitfire sound through his fabulous arrangements and renowned Laurie Bower(of the Laurie Bower singers fame!)doing the vocal group arranging on their Columbia recordings.
The story of how Mr.Rae came to form his group is interesting but suffice to say this former WW2 Spitfire pilot gathered around him some of the best Canadian musicians to play the music he loved and heard growing up.
And what a job he did. This CD is about the best that you can get to give an overall view of the sound and talent of the band.Besides Mr.Raes' great turns on vocals the best aspect of this band was its' ability to take all these great tunes and essentially make them their own. They kept the essence of each while adding just enough of their own style to make each song memorable in its' own right.
That's the five stars part of this review. Now onto the two stars.
There is a defect on this CD and it occurs during the last few seconds of "Marie",the only song effected. If you play this CD normally(from tracks 1 -24) or jump around from track to track it will play fine.
However if you program your CD player to play your tracks in a specific order,i.e 7,10,21,3..etc,etc.,the defect will effect the play. That defect is this:the song cuts off just a few seconds short of its' end.To make a long story short when a CD is made each song has a "marker" implanted which tells the pick up beam exactly when a song is done.Read more ›

Although maybe not quite up to the best performances available now and in the past, the performances here -- both instrumental and vocal -- are still quite good. Read morePublished on September 1, 1999
