I have listening to Big Band Music since I was about 4 years old (my father hosted a jazz programe on the radio) but I have always prefered the original bands to the newer bands playing the old tunes. Well I still prefer the originals (nobody plays Miller as well as Miller!) but this band is the best new band I have heard. The arrangements are close enough to the original sound without being just another blatent copy with players who play well but don't quite get that original feel. This is instead a great band who play extremely well in the style and yet the arrangements are individual enough not to be a direct copy, yet original enough to bring back all those wonderful memories that the Big Band era is all about. If you like (or love) big band music, you will be impressed by this disc. I heartily recommend it.

Do you ever think of the hay day of the big bands, when Glenn, Tommey, Benny at el where playing in your local town? Did you try to see how many dances you could go before becoming winded? Well this cd will help you, if you will let it, relive those golden days of the big band.
For this particular cd, the Spitfire Band puts on a good show. They play a lot of my favorite songs. Their arrangements are what I think the big bands should soound like. WONDERFUL
I think this kind of music is on the rebound. I hope more bands will try to start playing this kind of music. Maybe the dances of the 40's will come back. I sure hope so!
I Would Like To Recommend This Cd

This is the first time I have heard this band and I have to say it's GREAT! They have caught the sounds and feeling of the big band era and the singers fit right in.The trumpet and trombone work was excellent, as well as the rest of the band. I feel they will be around for a long time to come. No, big band is not dead. I HIGHLY recommend this cd.

If you love the big band sounds of the 40's and 50's, you can't miss on this one. The arrangements are true to history, except that some cuts have been shortened, probably for time. Otherwise, they sound just as Miller, the Dorseys, Goodman and others recorded them, except minus the popcorn and noise.

As a piano player for a big (dance) band in the 40's and
50's, this is one of the greatest CDs to come out. I
can highly recomend it to anyone with big band
asperatons.

I've been a big fan of Jackie Rae and his Spitfire Band since I first heard it in the very early 1980s.
Rae had some really talented people working for and with him like Micky Erbe who was responsible for much of the Spitfire sound through his fabulous arrangements and renowned Laurie Bower(of the Laurie Bower singers fame!)doing the vocal group arranging on their Columbia recordings.
The story of how Mr.Rae came to form his group is interesting but suffice to say this former WW2 Spitfire pilot gathered around him some of the best Canadian musicians to play the music he loved and heard growing up.
And what a job he did. This CD is about the best that you can get to give an overall view of the sound and talent of the band.Besides Mr.Raes' great turns on vocals the best aspect of this band was its' ability to take all these great tunes and essentially make them their own. They kept the essence of each while adding just enough of their own style to make each song memorable in its' own right.
That's the five stars part of this review. Now onto the two stars.
There is a defect on this CD and it occurs during the last few seconds of "Marie",the only song effected. If you play this CD normally(from tracks 1 -24) or jump around from track to track it will play fine.
However if you program your CD player to play your tracks in a specific order,i.e 7,10,21,3..etc,etc.,the defect will effect the play. That defect is this:the song cuts off just a few seconds short of its' end.To make a long story short when a CD is made each song has a "marker" implanted which tells the pick up beam exactly when a song is done.

While very good, the band seems to have something lacking in the first half of the CD. I bought this to get the clarinet virtuoso number "After You've Gone" which I heard on the radio and am quite pleased, but something is still missing. Then, something happens at cut 14--"Near You". It's like the band has warmed up and is ready to roll, and roll they do. The sound is somehow better and the coordination between band members is superb. What is wonderful about this, is that they play some of the tunes that have been pushed aside or forgotten. I was listening in the car and was tempted to pull over and start dancing on the side of the road.

I've been looking for a band that has the big band sound and the good musicians to play it. I am very satisfied with the CD and highly recommend it to anyone. I got the CD is a few days and everything was fine.
