Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Hello Coffee Fanatics!

Earlier in my life I had the pleasure of working at a very popular Espresso drive-through. I loved working there - it was fun and challenging (not to mention delicious)!

During that time, I was pretty surprised at how simple and easy the cold (iced and frozen) espresso drinks were to make. People spent insane amounts of money on them every week, but they really didn't need to.

Those weekday morning visits often added up - $5/day works out to be $1300 per year. That's positively cringe-worthy!

Why I wrote this book:

A few years ago, I opened a company that sells travel mugs and coffee tumblers and I knew that I wanted to help my customers save even more money by learning to make their own cold espresso drinks.

And thusly, my book was born.

I've written this book to walk you through the process, step-by-step, to make your own delicious iced coffees and frappuccino-style blended drinks.

Who I wrote this book for:

This book is specifically written towards those of you who aren't necessarily interested in learning the perfect grinding, tamping, and shot-pulling techniques of traditional espresso -- you simply want to be able to make a delicious drink like the one you get from your local coffee house.

If that is you, then I truly hope you enjoy this book. It came from my heart, with a true desire to share my knowledge -- and I hope you find it useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars No expensive machine required June 6, 2012

I just learnt something! Before reading this book, I'd always thought I'd need one of those expensive espresso/cappuccino
makers, you know the one's that clutter up your counter and are a real pain to clean. One of those machines that usually goes up on a forgotten shelf once the novelties worn off!

But no, Bethany shows how to make the same delicious cappuccino's, iced coffees etc that cost an arm and a leg in the coffee shops, and all from simple ingredients with common, everyday equipment we all have in our kitchens at present.

I have my first batch of cold brewed Toddy perking away in the refrigerator right now, and can't wait to savour my first Frappuccino, and best of all I'm not out couple of hundred bucks & NO MESS!

And to think the whole book cost less than a single Starbucks treat!

3.0 out of 5 stars "Toddy" isn't "Espresso" July 29, 2012

This book is flawed from the start...Now don't stop reading this review just because I said that; in actuality, there is some good information here but...lets get this straight...you make Espresso drinks with Espresso and you make cold coffee drinks with Toddy. They are completely and totally different methods of extracting the flavor from coffee and, as such, have neither interchangeable names nor flavor characteristics. Don't get me wrong, toddy drinks are easy to make and you don't need an espresso machine (or even a toddy maker) to get acceptable results, so that makes cold coffee drinks more readily available to just about anybody. Espresso, on the other hand, is an art form, and with the cost of a "real" espresso machine and the learning curve involved in actually producing a shot of perfect espresso, not to mention the expense of the grinder (which is as or more important to the end result as the espresso machine itself), well...you see why most folks plunk down big bucks for their coffee drinks at their local coffeehouse.

That being said, I also have a problem with the author's statement that "dark roast coffees have more flavor". Untrue, dark roast coffees have more ROAST flavor while coffees which are lighter roasts have more varietal flavor, the subtle nuances which make you think of blueberries or earthy hints or flowers or nuts etc.. You can roast any coffee; i.e., Sumatra, Panama, Kona, Jamaica Blue Mountain or any of the other wonderful varietals from around the world, dark enough that they will all taste just the same--like roast and nothing else. Sorry, but I really take issue with people who consider themselves professionals ("I'm also an ex-barista") and then present misinformation where their profession or ex-profession is concerned.

This book, as I said earlier, has its merits, so make some of the drinks and enjoy them. Just understand that you are NOT making espresso drinks like you get in a professional coffeehouse; you are making an acceptable substitute.
One last thing, the author uses this book as a way to market her brand of coffee cups so be advised, along with her "helpful hints" and recipes comes the infomercial for her line of cups.

Not the best, and certainly not the worst coffee related book I have read, so I gave it three stars.

Ok, so even though this book reads annoyingly like a 20 minute infomercial to sell the specific type of cups that the author sells through her private business, she is spot on with the process for making iced coffee drinks, and the information on how to make the toddy is great. I actually do mine a little differently because I like a stronger coffee, but her info is great for beginners. I did think the recipes should be written out more thoroughly, but if you know how to make stuff, they are easy enough to follow. I didn't find anything new for me, since I have been making my own drinks for years, but if you are interested in taking back some of your hard earned cash from Starbucks, this is a great resource.
