Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- These two books provide dozens of educational, absorbing, and amazingly attractive projects, all made from common household and school materials. The crafts, shown on heavy nonglare paper in bright clear colors, are explained in a crisp text printed in easy-to-read type. Spreads include complete step-by-step directions; completed projects appear first, followed by illustrations of materials and tools and instructions. Make Costumes! is virtually a party and Halloween sourcebook. Hershberger provides innovative, imaginative designs, and then shows children how to make the costumes from paper, fabric, paints, felt pens, foil, trims, and yarn. Recycling is encouraged through the use of such items as shower curtains and old clothes. Children are directed to get permission to set up shop, to not waste clothes or good cloth, and to clean up afterward. Make Cards! uses 12 techniques to create 21 different cards, including pop-ups, puzzles, books, game boards, collage, and pull-outs. There is a range of skill needed, and while all the cards can be made by children, some may require adult help. The finished products are uniformly of high quality and well worth the time and effort expended. Both books are clear, precise, and encouraging, excellent for (and best used by) adults who work with children. --Carole B. Kirkpatrick, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

I took a class with Priscilla a few years ago. She was wonderful! The book shows a lot of the projects we made and they are all extremely easy. This is great for rainy days or even Halloween.

5.0 out of 5 stars greatest book on re-cycling junk into costumes, March 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Make Costumes!: For Creative Play (Art and Activities for Kids) (Hardcover)
I am so inspired to show ways for children to do art, with no cost involved. Grocery bags, cereal boxes, shower curtains and other household stuff can become wonderful dress-up stuff, for children and adults. Since " Make Costumes " hit the shelves, I have been touring to places such as schools, to Art Museums, showing children simple ways to gain some self-esteem in producing art. Currently published in the " Best of the Year " by Walt Disney, Grolier Publications. E-Mail Priscilla Hershberger at pgorman@eptrust.org

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for any kid over 8, August 2, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Make Costumes!: For Creative Play (Art and Activities for Kids) (Hardcover)
I got this book from my school library when I was in 4th grade , hoping for some good halloween ideas. I was dissapointed that most of the ideas were for little kids or ideas that I already used. There was one idea that I liked and it was the princess shoes.
