3.0 out of 5 stars Nu-metal? Party rock? Whatever, it rocks., February 26, 2011
This review is from: Make It a Double (Audio CD)
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later...a nu-metal album that doesn't make me want to carve your eardrums out with a rusty screwdriver. Hell, maybe Mower isn't technically a nu-metal band (there's nobody rapping and the bass isn't doing that "boing boing Korn thing), but they sound enough like a metalized version of Nickelback and Hinder that the nu-metal (or at least alternative metal) tag seems appropriate.

Make It a Double is Mower's third album, and it's all over the place, swerving between rock, metal, punk and alternative before slowing down completely for the second half of the album. The first half is all thundering rhythms and crushing guitars, plus some very angry lyricism and sharp vocals. Think Static X and Biohazard, but with a degree of mainstream rock radio appeal. The second half of the album is made up of reworked versions of previous Mower songs done under the "Slower" tag. They're stripped down and almost lounge-y, but no less angry than the songs on the first half of the album.

Make It a Double is probably more effective in small doses. A few of these songs are more than enough to get the party started, but the "Slower" songs on the last half of the album kill the buzz pretty quickly. There's no denying the power of some of the songs on Make It a Double though. If Nickelback had released the party metal anthem "The Party" it would be in regular radio rotation for at least a year. Same with the song "Faded", which could have been released by any number of skinny-jeans-wearing emo types.

It may not work as a full album, but Make It a Double has enough very strong and very hard-hitting metal songs in the first half to make the album well worth checking out, particularly if you're already a fan of alternative and/or nu-metal. If you're not (and believe me I'm not in that camp), this might come as a welcome surprise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Come Join The Party!, August 30, 2010
This review is from: Make It a Double (Audio CD)
Been following this band for some time now even before they were signed to Suburban Noize Records. Always been one of my favorite bands with the duel vocalists thing going. One thing I've always admired about this band is they just do whatever the hell they want to with no certain structure of method. They've always made music their way with tons of energy behind their songs. Mower brings a mixture of metal with punk roots and a knack for clever lyrics to the table. Make It A Double is Mower's third release and they don't disappoint. Catchy riffs and grooves throughout and a pleasant surprise thrown into the mix. Make It A Double introduces the alter ego of the band with the second half of the album being older songs from their first two albums re-done in lounge/jazz music. Very cool to hear these songs with a whole different outlook on them and surprisingly enough it works extremely well. Although I'm really enjoying headbanging to this cd, I thought that the those songs would have been best suited on a bonus cd or something. I really enjoyed the new tracks but there's only really 7 new songs and a interlude and it leaves me begging for more. Overall you can't go wrong with this album if you enjoy this band as much as I do. Keep it coming Mower!
