Book Description

Help Your Dog Stay Healthy By Cooking At Home

If you have been worried about all the dog food recalls, unknown chemicals and additives in your dog's food, or have a dog with health challenges, this is the book you need to get started.
How To Make Dog Food contains not just recipes for dog food but everything you need to know about keeping your dog healthy. There are tips on the best foods for your dog, what foods to avoid, and the best supplements to add, including green superfoods and probiotics, and why you should include them in your dog's diet.

Making my own dog food started with the frustration of having a dog that was allergic to seemingly everything. There seemed to be no way to stop her from scratching herself to death. Nothing the vet suggested helped. That was when I decided to take her food preparation into my own hands, experiment with what worked for her and what did not, and formulate my own recipes to help stop her itching.

Here you will find:
• Cooked Dog Food Recipes
• Raw Dog Food Recipes and why many people feed their dog the Raw Diet
• Recipes for healthy puppies
• Which vegetables are best for your dog's system
• Foods that you should avoid giving to your dog and why
• Why grains may not be a good thing for your dog, especially if your dog has
food sensitivities or allergies
• Vitamins and Trace Minerals that your dog needs to stay in optimum health
• Home Made Dog Treats

About The Author

Hi! I'm a 53 year old Mom to 2 almost-teenage kids and two wonderful Boxers. All of our Boxers have had health challenges when they got older, but Satchi took the "Boxer Challenge" to a whole new level.
It has paid off, not only with a healthy dog, but a healthier family, as all of my research and experimentation for her has been incorporated into better food and nutrition for all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally - Easy to Use Recipes for My 3rd Family Member October 5, 2012

I'm so glad to have this book! It's actually the first time I've seen a book where the most pertinent information is gathered all in one place. The recipes are simple and with ingredients easily purchased (in general) at the grocery store at the same time I'm buying groceries for myself. I learned some things too. But it is a joy to know that most of the stuff my dog begs for is good for her (she's a leafy greens and carrot addict with whitefish dog food for the main meal!) Thanks for providing such good information in a concise format!

Great how to's on many levels. My dog's skin allergy has completely cleared up and he's lost some (fat) weight. His coat looks terrific!

My picky eater's gained some weight, too!

I was after a book that provided healthy, yet yummy recipes for my beloved dog. This book has so many 'extras' in it that I got more than I bargained for! Susannah does her best to ensure your pet gets the most out of life, from her well-researched vitamin advice to her healthy, easy, and inexpensive recipes. This book is just what I needed to learn how to properly care for my dog.

I had never considered making my dogs own food. Much less make healthy dog food. We had been spending almost 100$ a month on specialty dog food for our dogs. Now I don't have to spend more than about 30$ a month to make their food fresh and healthy

I was searching for a simple solution to balancing a home-made diet for my 3 month old schnauzer, Gus. I looked up a product called Balance IT, which is a supplement developed by canine nutritionists. Great! I will get the answer I am searching for, right? No.That website made supplementation so complicated, I never did get an answer as to how much supplement to add; they leave the amounts up to your veterinarian. My vet isn't a canine nutritionist, and neither am I. Their free custom recipe generator will include the doses, but it generated no recipes for Gus.
Back to discussing the Susannah Cane book- I have kindle version. Book is very straightforward and simple to understand, and qualifies as a good starter for healthy adult dogs. Only a few recipes are included, but that is OK, because I would probably not look for more variety, and more work! I was not interested in feeding raw, so cannot comment on this section. Half a star off because she doesn't differentiate between adults and puppies. There also isn't much about feeding for certain conditions or disorders. If you have a healthy adult dog and just want to know what supplements will maintain their health while feeding home-cooked, this book will get you started. She recommends organics, but doesn't use scare phraseology to discourage inorganic, grains, cooked vs. raw, etc., as many do.
Get a book written by a nutritionist if you want something more comprehensive. I have purchased Raw and Natural Nutrition For Dogs by Lew Olson, am waiting for it to arrive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Organized, good information November 27, 2012

I recently watched a Vet discussing on television that their busiest time is during the holidays when pet owners try to feed their animals special treats from their own tables, causing great distress to the animals. If you are interested in making your own Dog Food, this is an excellent resource.

It begins by telling the appropriate nutrients that are needed for your animal's health, then follows up this guide with recipes that include the appropriate mix in order to feed your pet. It has a wide variety of meats that you can use, including those that you might get for free - hunting.

But this book is a wonderful resource for humans, just because of the list of ingredients NOT to use in your dogs diet. I recommend it for this one list alone!

We have had several dogs over our many years, and all have lived long healthy lives, so I especially appreciate being able to make occasional meals for them as "super nummie nummies" as they are known in our house.

A good collection of recipes for homemade dog food. I first heard of this while showing a breed that had a long tradition of a specific recipe (raw lamb, cooked rice, steamed carrots and green beans, and raw milk). That recipe is not in the book, but many others are.
