5.0 out of 5 stars What Happened to This Woman?, June 10, 2002
By
This review is from: Make Him Do Right (Audio CD)
Somebody get her out of hiding and bring her back! Her last CD was an underrated, overlooked release that was bangin' with slammin tunes. "Hungah," written by Jam and Lewis, is a funkified dance number that'll have your head bobbin' to the beat. Babyface is in top form in his song, "Can I Stay with You," and White also shines in the irresistible "Weakness." Why this woman faded into obscurity while pretenders Ashanti manage to sell millions of records is beyond me, but if you wanna dig deep and find a hidden treasure of an r&b album, this is it.

Karyn White. What happened to her? This album is surely her best work yet. It's a shame she fell off the music scene though. This is my favorite Karyn White album out of the three.

4.0 out of 5 stars Karyn White = Underrated R&B Diva, August 22, 2000

Observers can say that Karyn White never reached her potential after her debut album. Although sales of her records dipped with her last two albums, Karyn stays true to herself and delivers a sweet & sensual album that focuses on love & relationships. Romantic tracks such as "Can I Stay With You," and "I'm Your Woman," evoke Karyn's jump from late '80s dance pop diva to one of the most influential contemporary R&B singers of our generation. Other standout tracks include the heartfelt ballad, "Here Comes The Pain Again," and "I'd Rather Be Alone," which both address the issues of domestic violence and female independence. Spending time listening to every song on this album will make you realize that Karyn White did the most right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul for Real, July 1, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Make Him Do Right (Audio CD)
This album is simply hot. No filler, just hot uptempo tracks and hard ballads. It's definitely Karyn's best work. I still listen to this album like it just came out yesterday. The ballads are some of the hottest joints by any female artist from the past or present. My favorite is Thinkin' Bout Love. Karyn just croons on that one. If you don't get this album, you must be 'Crazy, Crazy, Crazy'

4.0 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Gem, February 19, 2004

In the late 80's, Karyn White rocketed to stardom with a blockbuster debut album that featured a run of 4 top ten singles (THE WAY YOU LOVE ME, SECRET RENDEZVOUS, LOVE SAW IT and SUPERWOMAN, her signature song). She had another #1 single with 1991's ROMANTIC, but her momentum slowed after that.

In 1995, White returned with MAKE HIM DO RIGHT. The music landscape had changed greatly, and for the most part this album went largely unnoticed. Shame, because it turns out this was her best effort yet.

While nothing shines quite like THE WAY YOU LOVE ME or SUPERWOMAN, the album as a whole was an excellent set of consistently good songs. Standout tracks included I'D RATHER BE ALONE, HUNGAH, HERE COMES THE PAIN AGAIN, ONE MINUTE and the beautiful CAN I STAY WITH YOU (which became her final top ten single).

MAKE HIM DO RIGHT definitely has a more mature feel than her previous work, which, coupled with the long absence, may have worked against it; but to be heard today, it is actually a benefit. Sleek and smooth, MAKE HIM DO RIGHT deserves a reassessment by R&B enthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hunger For Karyn, May 26, 2001
This review is from: Make Him Do Right (Audio CD)
I own all of Karyn White' s work and "Make Him Do Right" is definitly her best work. The Album is a classic R&B with an excellent production from Flyte Tyme duet Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Babyface and Daryl Simmons. "Hungah", the first track (and single) is very upbeat with hot Karyn's vocals. The rest of the album is slower, with great ballads ("One Minute", "I'm Your Woman"). "Simple Pleasure" is one of Karyn' s all-time best song as "Can I Stay with You", a touching and beautiful ballad produced by Babyface. It's been too long since we haven't heard of karyn and I do Hope she' ll be back with a brand new album . she's one of the best Soul/R&B artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for some "grown folks' music"? Well, here it is!, July 11, 2006
This review is from: Make Him Do Right (Audio CD)
Though it's twelve-years old, Karyn White's "Make Him Do Right" can stand toe to toe with some of the female stars on the contemporary scene. In fact, in comparison to hit albums from Mary J. Blige or Mariah Carey, White's release is just as good. Blending tight production with lyrics that reveal a singer's passion, "Make Him Do Right" is a brilliant composition. With the songwriting/producing skills of husband Terry Lewis and his partner Jimmy Jam, along with Babyface and Daryl Simmons, the album primarily focuses on male-female relationships in all their complexities.

The song titles speak for themselves and White pulls no punches in expressing her love for her man, her desires, and her intent on being in control of the situation, no matter if it seems that he is "in charge."

In an album filled with hits, one really stands out: the Babyface-penned "Can I Stay with You". White sings this one with so much conviction that one could only wish that he or she could be so fortunate to have a lover like the one she describes, a man or woman with such "appeal" that one would want to spend eternity.

White has a winner here and it's mind-boggling as to why there was no follow-up!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, July 9, 2005
This review is from: Make Him Do Right (Audio CD)
I love this CD. I had the original cassette tape when it first came out back in 1994. I was a freshman in college and I would play it (on high volume) in the dorm room all day (I'm sure my roommate was sick of me). Now, 11 years later, I keep a copy of the CD in my "classic" collection. Since good music is so hard to find now-a-days, I pull this one out just to listen to some real R&B.

4.0 out of 5 stars karyn white does it right., January 15, 1999
This review is from: Make Him Do Right (Audio CD)
with charm, style, sophistication and a damn good voice, it's a wonder that karyn white has been unable to maintain the success she found with her eponymous debut. white has always produced strong albums with a number of chart-quality songs on each, but _make him do right_ is her best yet! songs like "hungah" and "simple pleasures" resurrect the sexy, playful image exuded on _ritual of love_ while "can i stay with you", "i'd rather be alone" and "make him do right" reveal white to be on the road to becomming a classic (if under-rated) talent in the vein of miki howard or regina belle. white takes co-writing credits on most of the albums tracks--along with jimmy jam & terry lewis--as well as scoring a couple of babyface numbers. this album is solid from beginning to end and hints at what ms. white is truly capable of.

I remember this CD coming out on my birthdate, so it was only right for me to purchase it. Karyn White was truly talented, i was there when she performed for Jeff Lober and killed it on "The Facts of Love". I wish she would come back and do more music cause the music scene is dull without her soulful vocals. I have all three of her CD's and i am still a HUGE Fan event hough she is not performing anymore just raising her family and staying out of the limelight. All i can say is "Hungah" is the funky number that can't stay out of my head, the beautiful soulful voice and lovely lyrics by babyface he knew her voice so well on "Can I Stay With You" "Weakness" is another great track with hit all over it "No Body but my Baby" Is the bomb song, MY ALL TIME FAV from this album is "Here Comes The Pain Again" WOW what a voice and the lyrics are so IN YOUR FACE..........."I'd Rather Be Alone" is another gem, "Make Him Do Right" is right on with today's music scene, "Simple Pleasures" is a fun sexy kitten kinda song for Karyn White to tease & taunt us with LOVE IT! "I'm Your Woman another stand out track "Think'n Bout Love is another winner in my book and "One Minute" is another great song very nice lyrics and there again that voice of KARYN WHITE! Not a bad track here, every song is a winner. Pick this one up and go back in time when music REALLY meant something.........TRUE SOUL & TALENT from the one and only KARYN WHITE!
