When I saw the star rating for this book, I doubted that it would be deserved. Even the Taunton Books have some weak areas, so I have become skeptical. However, this book is nearly flawless, at least as far as what I bought it for. The fact that tables of information are included is very important for me. He doesn't just talk about different types of insulation in the text, he charts out the different types.

The unique value of this book however, is the wisdom he shares after encountering so many different situations and finding solutions to them. It is unbelievably difficult to find some solutions to renovation problems. Most books simply talk about simple, standard situations, not the difficult ones. His discussion of basement refinishing for a living space is absolutely priceless. I wonder whether this advice is anywhere else in print.

The truly amazing thing, however, is that a book as valuable as this, printed on sturdy glossy paper stock and thoroughly illustrated, is 14 bucks.

If you consider buying this book and live in warmer climates, please note that there is a lot of information that will not be of interest. Mike builds in Toronto, Canada. Houses are built differently up there to protect them from water and ice intrusion as well as heat and cold fluctuation. The majority of the problems that are encountered in colder climates are not necessarily an issue in areas with more moderate climates, so your going to be sifting through a lot of information to get to the stuff you need that's pertinent to you (and he doesn't do a good job of distinguishing the two). I'm a contractor and I found myself researching a lot of the stuff mentioned in the book online to get a better understanding of what he is talking about. That being said I did learn a lot after reading this book and am more educated as a builder even if its not pertinent to what I do on a daily basis.

The one other thing that they could improve on this book is to have more diagrams and pictures. There is ALOT of information condensed into 200 pages. This book would be better suited if it was 400-500 pages and some of the concepts explained a little more thoroughly. The best way to read this book is to read and surf the internet to better understand some of the information.

If you've ever seen his shows, you know the character of Mike Holmes only allows himself to do things one way; The right way! Oh what a world this would be if everyone was half as honorable as this man. That being said, his book is every bit as informative and entertaining as his shows are. I cannot speak as to the helpfulness of the information to the professional as I am not myself a licensed general contractor, but I have a hard time believing anybody but won't end up giving this book 5 stars once they read it. If I must pick something out to jeer about, it would have to be the fact that it is of course written with Canadian codes in mind, since Mr. Holmes is of course, Canadian. But those instances are far too infrequent to tarnish this title.

While I'm not in the process of home renovation, I have been house hunting in a new city (USA). This book has become my precious reference for insuring that other people have had their renovations done "right". Now I check for permits, have an outline of questions to ask the realtor, owner and home inspector. Mike has made me a MUCH better consumer and I thank him many times over for it.

11/2011 update: I am giving this book to a family member and ordered the trade version, which is more detailed, for myself. Either way, the information is invaluable. Still 5 stars!

This book isn't so much a how-to as it is a well-written guide on how to not make expensive mistakes. It gives very thoughtful advice on which products and techniques work and which don't. The basement insulation discussion alone made the book worth the price for me. Don't buy this book expecting that you will be able to find instructions on how to frame a wall, lay tile, or install electrical work. But! if you want a book that explains -why- you should do something a certain way or use a specific product or material this is the kind of book you want. Some of the stuff I found really useful included how to properly use rigid insulation on basement walls, how to properly prepare a slab floor for finishing, and the comparison of different roofing options and the benefits/drawbacks of each.

When it comes to Mike Holmes, I always expect more. This book really isn't all THAT impressive. It provides you with very basic guidelines and advice but nothing near the detail I was looking for. I want to know simple things like, for example, when wiring a light switch, you should leave approximately 8" of wire in the box, not too much and not so short that the next person who needs to wire something has nothing to work with. These are the kind of off-handed advice tid-bits he gives on his show so that is what I was looking for. Didn't deliver. But it is a good basic book telling you his opinion on the best insulation type, piping type, and things like that.

You'll love this book if you like looking at Mike as much as he does. There are way too many photos of his mug, but I guess his face is his brand . . . otherwise the content seems okay. It is written for the homeowner who knows nothing about houses. But that kind of person is not likely to take on the projects Mike tells you how to do yourself.
