4.0 out of 5 stars MOSTLY GOOD MATERIAL, May 13, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Make Me Sweat (Audio CD)
This release is the first of the two GNP Crescendo Records the band made in the late 80s--I think. (See my review of the other one, KINGS OF BOOGIE.) It's a mixture of Savoy standards, pop-blues, boogie, blues rock, and an instrumental, with a narrative. This seems to be a transitional offering leading to the outstanding KINGS OF BOOGIE album. I think they didn't quite know what to do as yet. They did remakes of HARD WAY TO GO and TELL MAMA. LIMOUSINE BOOGIE is very good. JUST FOR KICKS may be the group's best blues rocker. It starts off with a narrative by the drummer. GOOD TIME LOVER is a piano blues number. ON THE PROWL is the spoken instrumental, by the drummer. The other offerings are basically of the pop blues variety, and are very good. The sound is strange. They use reverb, and the vocals seem a little bit distorted. This approach pretty much destroys Dave Walker's excellent singing voice. Kim helps with the singing. I give it four stars because it's mostly good material. I guess they wanted this to be an introduction for the non blues rock public, trying to get radio play. On the next release, KINGS OF BOOGIE, they knew what they wanted--a pop blues format--and they succeeded admiringly. They fixed Walker's voice, making it the showcase, which it deserves. MAKE ME SWEAT is not exactly Savoy Brown's type of album, but I like it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is This a live album?, March 5, 2003
By
This review is from: Make Me Sweat (Audio CD)
Listening to this I have the sense that it is live.
The playing isn't that good, and Dave Walker was always
their worst vocalist. That is why their record sales went
down in the mid seventies. The covers of their old standards
didn't do them justice. I saw Savoy at the hight of their career.
This record sounds like a poor immitation. There are too many
5 star ratings of 2 & 3 star records. Come on people the public
buys these based on your reviews. Be honest.I know the music today sucks, but back in my heyday this record would have been
a big disapointment.
