Book Description

November 30, 2010
If you could ask for a miracle right now, what would it be? We’ve all had situations in our lives that seem beyond our control or that have no clear remedy. In this concise, inspirational guide, bestselling self-help guru Melody Beattie shows us that we have the ability to make a miracle for almost any circumstance we’re facing.

Beattie, a trusted counselor for millions of readers, has shared her own stirring stories of overcoming obstacles and dealing with life’s tragedies for more than twenty-five years. In Make Miracles in Forty Days she now offers the ultimate distillation of what she knows about gratitude, surrender, and connecting with our essential power. She challenges us to be more present each day and details a six-week action plan, the Miracle Exercise, to jump-start transformation in our lives. After completing a series of activities, we’ll establish what miracles we’d like to create, and then she’ll walk us through practicing this innovative exercise alone, with a partner, and even with our children. Beattie instructs us to be thankful for everything in our lives and for how we’re really feeling; we need to express gratitude for what we have and who we are, not just for our obvious blessings. It is crucial that we are grateful for recognizing what is upsetting and bothering us. Through acknowledging the pain that we’re feeling, we can excise any denial or resistance that is holding us back. As we progress over the forty days, instead of feeling lost, numb, or confused, we’ll become more conscious, aware, and alive. Our miracle will begin to materialize.

Along the way, Beattie reveals her own experiences of making miracles, individually and through working with a partner, and those of the participants in her Miracle Workshop. She shares moving stories of overcoming hardship and finding acceptance and forgiveness, and inspires us to move forward with a renewed vigor for life.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

For those of you purchasing this book (paperback copy will be out soon), a new web site can be found at my dot org url (which we're not supposed to give out here).   There, other readers participate in a forum, ask questions, tweak the way they're doing the activity, and share successes.  I answer all questions personally.  The most important thing is to not "cheat" and instead first read the book and do the warm-up activities, then do the miracle-making exercises.  I know you're excited and in a hurry, but it's important to understand what you're doing and why you're doing it this way.  It combines the most powerful spiritual premises with several key recovery premises so that  the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.  I wouldn't share and write about this unless I knew it works. Melody Beattie

More About the Author

Melody Beattie is one of America's most beloved self-help authors and a household name in addiction and recovery circles. Her international bestselling book, Codependent No More, introduced the world to the term "codependency" in 1986. Millions of readers have trusted Melody's words of wisdom and guidance because she knows firsthand what they're going through. In her lifetime, she has survived abandonment, kidnapping, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, divorce, and the death of a child. "Beattie understands being overboard, which helps her throw bestselling lifelines to those still adrift," said Time Magazine.

Melody was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1948. Her father left home when she was a toddler, and she was raised by her mother. She was abducted by a stranger at age four. Although she was rescued the same day, the incident set the tone for a childhood of abuse, and she was sexually abused by a neighbor throughout her youth. Her mother turned a blind eye, just as she had denied the occurrence of abuse in her own past.

"My mother was a classic codependent," Melody recalls. "If she had a migraine, she wouldn't take an aspirin because she didn't do drugs. She believed in suffering." Unlike her mother, Melody was determined to self-medicate her emotional pain. Beattie began drinking at age 12, was a full-blown alcoholic by age 13, and a junkie by 18, even as she graduated from high school with honors. She ran with a crowd called "The Minnesota Mafia" who robbed pharmacies to get drugs. After several arrests, a judge mandated that she had to "go to treatment for as long as it takes or go to jail."

Melody continued to score drugs in treatment until a spiritual epiphany transformed her. "I was on the lawn smoking dope when the world turned this purplish color. Everything looked connected--like a Monet painting. It wasn't a hallucination; it was what the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous calls 'a spiritual awakening.' Until then, I'd felt entitled to use drugs. I finally realized that if I put half as much energy into doing the right thing as I had into doing wrong, I could do anything," Beattie said.

After eight months of treatment, Melody left the hospital clean and sober, ready to take on new goals: helping others get sober, and getting married and having a family of her own. She married a former alcoholic who was also a prominent and respected counselor and had two children with him. Although she had stopped drinking and using drugs, she found herself sinking in despair. She discovered that her husband wasn't sober; he'd been drinking and lying about it since before their marriage.

During her work with the spouses of addicts at a treatment center, she realized the problems that had led to her alcoholism were still there. Her pain wasn't about her husband or his drinking; it was about her. There wasn't a word for codependency yet. While Melody didn't coin the term codependency, she became passionate about the subject. What was this thing we were doing to ourselves?

Driven into the ground financially by her husband's alcoholism, Melody turned a life-long passion for writing into a career in journalism, writing about the issues that had consumed her for years. Her 24-year writing career has produced fifteen books published in twenty languages and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. She has been a frequent guest on many national television shows, including Oprah. She and her books continue to be featured regularly in national publications including Time, People, and most major periodicals around the world.

Although it almost destroyed her when her twelve-year-old son Shane died in a ski accident in 1991, eventually Melody picked up the pieces of her life again. "I wanted to die, but I kept waking up alive," she says. She began skydiving, mountain-climbing, and teaching others what she'd learned about grief.

This is another five star winner from author Melody Beattie, well-known for her past work in the area of codependency. I didn't know what to think when I read the title "Make Miracles in Forty Days" and thought that perhaps this time she had overreached, but I was wrong. This short book covers exactly why and how you can--by doing an exercise she calls "Project Miracle"--make profound changes in your life--everything from actual miracles of things happening that you can hardly believe to major shifts in your attitude and how you experience things. This is not a shallow book at all or one that makes empty promises, for you must be willing to work honestly and hard for at least ten minutes a day each and every day for forty days on the Miracle Project. Obviously, the book doesn't guarantee miracles, but I can guarantee you that you will not do the work and be unchanged; whether or not you choose to participate, I think you will agree with me.

It is a short book of 129 pages of content with almost 50 pages of sample exercises, but you really need that much to truly understand all there is to doing the Miracle Project correctly. Many people, like the author, will choose to do this as a life practice. I read the book tonight and am starting the exercise tomorrow (the author suggests doing it in the morning not more than a half hour after you get up), although I did some of it tonight as I was so eager to start. I'll do it for the forty days, and if it helps me as much as I think it will, I plan to also adopt it as a life practice. [Note: I will update this review in 40 days.] The book includes information about how to do the Miracle Project with kids, an FAQ section, and lots of "how to" information since it's important to do the exercise correctly to get good results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make Miracles in Forty Days June 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I admit I ordered this book because I was already a fan of Melody Beattie. The title made me a little skeptical, but I had learned the wisdom of Melody Beattie was not to be taken lightly. As I read the pages, I kept thinking, "But what's the secret?" "Why would this work?" "Are you kidding me?" "Where are the practical steps?" And then finally, "Is that all there is?" "Where is the REAL message?" And yet I rated the book five stars. Why would I do that? It's a simple reason. I tried it and it worked. I can't explain it. I could give you a long story about how it worked in my life. But my story wouldn't be your story. I can only say it worked 100% for me, way beyond my expectations. I believe if you follow through with the advice and simple activities she suggests it will probably work for you. But like I said I'm a Melody Beattie fan. (No I have never met her, but I've read her books for years). I didn't let my skepticism keep me from trying to follow through on the steps that she suggested. And it worked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work this book and it will work for you January 9, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book in order to attend a workshop at my church. I am still doing the very simple and easy to follow steps outlined in the beginning of the book and they work wonderfully. What this book did for me was to make me be honest with myself about things that bother me that I might otherwise sweep under the rug and try to ignore. By being open and honest with myself about everything that pushes my emotional buttons--positive and negative--I am becoming much more in touch with myself and have been able to let go of problems from the past that I didn't even know were still holding me back. Working these miracles takes self honesty and the rewards are tremendous. Try it for yourself, alone or with a partner, and stick with the process. You will see results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth trying July 16, 2011

I found this quote from the author, Melody Beattie, about gratitude a few years ago and it has sustained me in difficult times: "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."

Her name kept popping up in my reading recently and that lead me to this book. I downloaded it last night and finished it today. It's easy to read, peppered with stories and anecdotes that I found interesting and certainly simple enough to incorporate into my daily ritual which already included expressing gratitude. Now it will be gratitude with a twist that I'd never considered.

It's already given me the courage to ask for the one change in my life that I always believed to be impossible, and to accept that I've seen enough truly amazing miracles happen to realize what I ask for is minor in comparison to most.

I'll update along the way, but today I'm really grateful to have found this book.
