I have been writing my church's newsletter for years. When I was told that the newsletter was going from paper to a website and blog format I was petrified. I use e-mail, but the idea of website design and blogging was overwhelming.

Then I was told about this book. In the first chapter the author provides full and clear definitions of the parts of a website and how to use these parts. I have referenced these definitions frequently to make sure I know what I am doing. I now know how to make clear links so I do not confuse or lose my readers. I understand navigation options and feel confident when talking about websites.

The section called, "What to do and what to avoid" answered a lot of questions for me about website design. I now know why I should add something to my site or why not to add something. This information was priceless.

I was able to add advertisements to our blog easily. Again the author held my hand and showed me where to go. The examples of companies I could trust was very helpful so I knew I was not being cheated.

I really appreciated the information about web design and how to pick a site name. The examples were helpful and even funny at times. This section truly saved me from making mistakes. For example, I never thought about all the places I would need to write or say the site name. Thinking about how a listener might interpret the words in a site name helped me to pick a clear name. A site name is forever and a poor one will give you lots of headaches.

I am not a pro yet, but I definitely feel more confident because of the hand holding provided by this book. It allowed me to start at the beginning of the website process without making me feel dumb. If you're starting out and want to feel safe and informed about how to develop a website or blog I highly recommend this book.

One last thought, I love to watch the numbers on my website grow, and my blog even makes a few dollars every month!

Underwhelming May 20, 2011

I was after tips on how to position a website to go viral. Philip's book offered nary a single nugget of helpful insight. Not one. It was WAY too rudimentary. Anyone with a lick of common sense will NOT benefit from this book.

For example, you expert entrepreneurs out there, do NOT choose the domain name of expertsexchange.com for your site. Duh!

And make sure you ask potential developers "how long will site development take?" Duh!

And since content is king, make sure you deliver "dazzling copy that excites the emotions of the potential customer". Roger that.

And when providing a service, be darn sure to focus on the needs of your customer, not self-promotion. Double-duh!

I've never given a scathing review, but this tract (not book) is deserving of ire because it touts "in less than 5 hours, you will be able to make money from your site/blog". A total lie. There are no how-to's in this book whatsoever, it's all simpleton theory that is just..... DUH! Again, there is nothing substantial in this book that will facilitate web traffic.

The sealer for me was the "chutzpah" site proffered by the author: [...]. Can you say chutzBLAH? This is a crappy site and a crappy, uninformed book.

Lastly, on the back cover it says "$15 such a deal!". What an insult and ripoff. Buyer beware.

Great for Beginners! June 26, 2011
Format:Paperback
I have never written a review before, but after reading an earlier 2 star review I just had to respond. I found this book to be perfect for beginners like me!

I recently became the webmaster for a small non-profit, not because I have any great expertise, merely because I am the only one in our group who isn't afraid of their computer. I found the page which diagrammed and labeled the parts of a website very helpful when I needed to contact our website host about making changes. It helped me go from feeling like a complete website idiot, to just someone learning the ropes.

I found great tips on how to make our site more welcoming and user friendly. I particularly appreciated the advice on how to create an "anchor" to a specific spot on a page, something I find very frustrating when I visit other sites!

He also gave great advice on choosing colors and fonts that I wouldn't have thought of. I've since gotten feedback from some seniors who visit our site, on what they could and couldn't read, and found that Dr. Copitch was spot on. I also thought that the advice on picking a name was great food for thought. How many times have you heard an ad for a company's website and wondered, "how is that spelled?" or seen a vehicle with a website plastered on the back and wondered, "I wonder what their business is?" Well, if they had read this book before they picked their domain name they wouldn't have left you guessing. Since reading this book I've gone to other sites and thought - they really need to read this book!

If the advice in this book was all as "duh" as BW said it was, then why are there so many poorly done websites out there? I highly, highly recommend this book to any website beginners.
