Great Electric Bluesman,
By A Customer
This review is from: Make It Rain (Audio CD)
Michael Burks is an awesome combination of soulful blues singing and fiery guitar licks. He is a great blues story teller and the songs on this album demonstrate his talents. I think that Michael Burks and Larry McCray (another unheralded blue phenomenon) offer a good glimpse at the future of the blues.

I saw this guy about a month ago in concert at a small club. He blew me away, I hadn;t heard of him before this, now i am telling everyone about him. His tone is incredible, has been likened to that of Albert King, well he does an astounding job upholding this feat. Not only his tone is great, but his powerful licks are something else too. Be on the look out for this guy in your area, he is down right great. And this CD captures that power and tone beautifully. Check him out people.

I saw Michael Burks live at the Santa Cruz Blues Festival and bought this CD on the spot. I really like this CD. He is true to the tradition of blues, but he brings a bit of his own style as well. It not the same old tired blues stuff. ... and it makes you feel good about the future of blues. In the middle of his set he broke into a long version of "Who Knows." Michael, if you are reading this, you have to record that number!!! It was amazing!

This album is awesome. You will not need to fast forward to any track on the album because they are all great. Michael Burks is similiar in style to Luther Allison & Larry McCray. This disk will stay in your player for a long time. Bravo...

Michael Burks cd Make It Rain is typical of todays ever growing line-up of blues based guitar monsters. What's different about this cd and Michael Burks himself is the really soulful voice that he displays on just about every song. He brings that Albert King like blues-soul mix that sounds like he's laughing at you on some of the tracks. Throw in some basic flame-thrower guitar and a few funky licks and you've got areally enjoyable cd.

My husband and I saw Michael Burks at the South Street Seaport in NYC last summer. It was so refreshing to hear someone with talent peform live. (As you can tell I don't get out much!) Anyhow I was enthralled with the performance and sat through the whole set in very hot weather. I could have listened to him for hours. His accompanying musicians were great also and it was a magical time. I immediately looked for a cd on Amazon.com and found this one. Overall the cd is great but I guess I was spoiled by the live performance and in comparison it was better. I guess this is to be expected and I don't was to discourage anyone from buying the cd. I hope he releases a new one soon.

I had to buy both of Michael Burks CD's as I had the priviledge of his excellent guitar and vocals on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise this January. He played alot of these songs and I truly enjoyed his talents. I look forward to seeing him again in Chicago this weekend and wish him the best of luck with all his upcoming CD's.

Just RIPPIN,

I have all of the Michael Burks cds. Some consider his first one the best (and relatively hard to get anywhere but on Amazon), but every CD has some good and some variables. Everyone's taste is different so the ones I may not like, may be the ones someone else swears by. The cds are all like real time live plays, though some live played songs in a club may go on doble or so.
He plays the Strat with most of the songs, and the Flying V for some songs (albert king types). Big dude, from ARK, though plays a hard hitting mississipi sound reminiscent of RL Burnside, choppy blues with a hint of rock and down home (The North Mississippi Allstars features the kids of RL Burnside and others, and quite a few of those songs run with those of Michael Burks). When the dude plays a show, he doesn't know when to quit, plus he's nice with all the fans. When I first saw him he had an all 'brother' band, but has since changed a few hands. Burks has a such a nice disposition, he could be any christian's really good neighbor, provided that they can handle some BB King, Albert King, Robert Johnson style 'gospel' music that really comes from within. His aren't blues that are written in any sort of book, but each tune is soul language from deep within. Sad to say it, but the blues are the language of the oppressed. Some people listen to the blues to feel better, but when you listen to a guy like Michael Burks, it can make a grown man cry and feel closer to the Savior- music that only comes from some regular guy that has been beat down, beat up, made to suffer, had to pray a time or two, whose only 'offense' in life was that he was a little more brown than the rest of us. When a guy like that picks up a guitar and spills his gut...well, if you don't feel anything deep down, as a human perhaps you need to change a few things around. better believe it. |
