This book is a must-have for every self-publisher. It is filled with ideas, information, resources and practical links to help you sell books outside the book trade.
Being a self-publisher myself of my first book, I missed information on how to actually turn these ideas into practical doing. For example, if you have found a large company that your book would be a great match with, how do you find the right person to talk to? The book talks a lot about the importance of pitching to the right person, but not how to find these people within a company. Maybe that's just pure sales-tactics, and I would need to get another book about that subject, but I would have appreciated at least some information in this book. Especially, because the author has a lot of experience in that field. Also, some (more) examples of pitch letters would have helped.
But overall, a great book for every self-publisher.

Making a living as an author is tough, I have been trying to do it for 4 years now and I am still struggling. In this new book by Brian Jud the thought of actually making a living as an author seems obtainable! I am so excited to have read this book, I had to have a notebook by my side because I took so many notes. Brian shares his expertise and knowledge on selling books in a way that can help you make money, gain exposure and be successful. I would highly recommend this book to anyone even considering writing a book, becoming an author or thinking about how much money they could make once they write and market their book. A real eye opener full of resources and tips that will take you to the next level.

This book provides in-depth information on selling books through nontraditional sales channels, including bulk sales, educational sales, selling to libraries and the military, book clubs, catalogs and more.

The author includes a high level of detail and lots of resources. For example, the chapter on gift shops includes detailed information on selling to Hallmark stores, a list of gift shop chains, and information about gift industry publications, tradeshows and distributors. The specialty store chapter discusses working with national distributors who supply products to chains and gives insight into how to sell to these stores.

How to Make Real Money Selling Books is highly recommend to any author or publisher who wants to succeed in selling into non-bookstore markets.

This book by Brian Jud is a powerhouse of valuable information. In it, Mr. Jud teaches you how to assess your market, meaning, how to understand who it is who might buy your book, and how to make contact with them.

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be "thorough." Mr. Jud not only explains everything clearly, but he seems to know which areas of marketing and promotion new authors seem to have problems understanding. In order to get past that, he adds extra material to explain the difficult parts from other perspectives. For example, in one area of the book he discusses how to approach book buyers at major chain stores. Then, after telling you what to do, he retells the material from the viewpoint of a chair store buyer, explaining how the buyer gets offers to carry new books every day, so, how does the buyer choose which new books to carry? And, what is it that you can do to help the buyer decide to carry your book.

I have numerous books on how to self-publish and promote books, but Brian Jud's "How to Make Real Money Selling Books Without Worrying about Returns: A Complete Guide to the Book Publishers' World of Special Sales" is by far, the best book I've read that makes sense of how the book business works. His book has taught me where my advantages as a self-published author are, as well as which areas are potential time wasters. I highly recommend this book.

"Wow! Brian Jud's book, How to Make Real Money Selling Books (without worrying about returns), really opened my eyes to the possibilities for beyond the book store sales. Like many other authors, I placed my focus originally on making sales of one or two books at a time online, at book signings, or selling books after a talk. It never occurred to me that I could sell my books by the hundreds or even thousands. Unlike many other books filled with lots of marketing "sizzle" Brian Jud's book is filled with "steak" of the informational variety that will provide hundreds of leads and contacts directly to organizations and businesses that may be interested in buying your book by the case. In addition, I found myself using Jud's ideas to hitchhike into new ideas that worked for my book topic. If you are a writer and you want to sell thousands of books, you need to get a copy of Brian Jud's How to Make Real Money Selling Books (without worrying about returns) and make it a reference for success in your daily book marketing effort."

This book was extremely helpful in outlining the different options when exploring specialty stores. I have been researching this topic for months, spending hours searching in different places for the information I need. Brian Jud did all the legwork by expertly arranging and explaining the various types of stores and types of organizations. This book was essential in helping me develop my marketing in sales plan in an efficient way.
