Book Description

Two great stories about when life was slower and families were closer. "Make Room for the Hollyhocks" - Eleven year old Sarah's life would never be the same after that cold January day when a sudden blizzard sweeps down on the family and catches their father in its wake. A faithful horse and a lamp in the window saved his life, but Sarah was thrust into a role beyond her years. She brings everything to life as she tells about the family struggles on their little farm and how they work together to survive. Sarah's Grandmother reminds her of the life of a Hollyhock. "Hollyhocks are a flower you can depend on. They can withstand all kinds of hardships. They remind me of some people I know"....Sarah's family came together in times of trial and worked to withstand the hardships that they faced. They learned about love, support and hard work. "Where the Birds Don't Sing" - The winter when Jonathan was only four brought the worst measle epidemic the small town had ever known. It left his mother dead and Jonathan without his hearing. Five years later Jonathan sat on the bench of his fathers blacksmith shop where he would watch his father work at the anvil. He listened for the spitting sound he once heard but now only silence greeted him. Jonathans father Caleb, decided to set aside his own grief and dedicated his life to his only son. He taught Jonathan everything he could, but communication was difficul until the year a new teacher moved to town and changed Jonathans life forever. Both stories take you back to a time when life was slower and families were closer. To survive you had to pull together and work as a family. Love, support, and hard work were a necessity.

About the Author

I was born in 1923 in Hawbush, Utah, in Millard County. It was a farming community that has since faded away to pasture lands and sand dunes. The houses are all gone, but this place and time still has a fascination for me.

I chose to put my characters in this setting because it was a time of peace and tranquility. A time where families pulled together to build character and lasting relationships.

I was married to Merlin Hare in 1940. He died in 1989. We have ten children, thirty-nine grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. With ten children there wasn't a lot of time for writing. I wrote small things when I had time, poetry mostly. Writing this book has been a dream of mine for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make Room for the Hollyhocks/Where the Birds Don't Sing, October 3, 2000

This review is from: Make Room for the Hollyhocks/Where the Birds Don't Sing (Paperback)
Both these stories were very interesting and told alot about the years before there was much modern technology. they were both spell bounding and I could not put the book down until I had finished reading it. Where the Birds Don't Sing was about a deaf boy and his family and the trials they had with him going to school, it also was full of adventure and romance. Make Room for the Hollyhocks was about a family and their hardships plus full of excitement. I would recommend these books to anyone because there was no bad language or violence but kept your interest.
