More About the Author

As cheerful and accessible as he is dynamic, TV host and chef Gerry Garvin has been a rising star in the world of fine dining since he was 13, when he joined the dishwashing staff at a haute Atlanta inn to help his single mother make ends meet. At 15 he became the youngest cook at the Atlanta Ritz-Carlton, followed by stints as executive chef at several top California restaurants before becoming the executive chef and co-owner of an award-winning restaurant in L.A.--a path that led him to television stardom.

He is the author of two previous cookbooks and host of two of the most popular shows on TV One--Turn Up the Heat with G. Garvin and the new G. Garvin: The Road Tour. Garvin's shows are available in more than 40 million households and reach nearly every major African-American community.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the Same June 29, 2008
Format:Paperback
I have both books. I do like the first book better. Here's why: I am an advanced cook. Super Simple is for less ambitious cooks. I do think Garvin has done an excellent job at keeping the simple from being boring. Three-cheese andouille-and-spinach stuffed tomatoes??! Come on now.

If you never learned to cook, you might not want to start with this book. It's Super Simple for folks who know their way around the kitchen. However, there is a section, "Don't Be Scared," for true beginning cooks. There's even a glossary to help understand key techniques.

This book still has merit if you are an intermediate and above cook. If you want to mix it up on a Tuesday night, grab this book -- great flavors with most recipes under an hour to prepare.

I think there are more pics of the food than him this time. I'm okay with that :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple Ain't Always Pantry Friendly July 17, 2008
Format:Paperback
Beginning cooks and on-the-go moms this cookbook is for you. There are nearly 200 recipes that are straightforward and quick to prepare. The G-Notes and G-Gotta-Be-Quick Tips at the bottom of every other page provide helpful tips and timely tricks to preparing these tasty meals. The glossary and top ten cooking tips are extremely beneficial for those wanting to hone their culinary skills. G. Garvin offers sensible twists on everyday dishes like: grilled chicken with prosciutto, asparagus pasta primavera, and crispy oven-baked fish. However, there are some ingredients not found in every pantry or fridge: swordfish, Roquefort cheese, and fruit compote to name a few.

G. Garvin gives his nod to the everyday cook. This book has more instruction and more pictures of food then the first. The commentary provided before each chapter reminds you of an old-fashioned soul food Sunday dinner time conversation. So get ready to add a few twists to your average monthly menu. Hook up wit ya boy, G. Garvin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Tasty Receipes April 20, 2008
Format:Paperback
This was the first G.Gavin book I have purchased and I am so happy. I loved how quick and yummy the receipes are and they are especially perfect for the busy person who doesn't have loads of time to cook. I have made several of the receipes and each one is so tasty. My family is falling in love G.Gavin and can't wait till I try another one of his receipes.
