A Real Musical Find,

I was drilling through Amazon looking for new music when I came across a list of new releases. I was intrigued by the CD art work of Greg Trooper's MAKE IT THROUGH THIS WORLD. So I gave a listen to the samples and immediately ordered the CD. I was simply amazed. There is not a bad tune on MAKE THROUGH THIS WORLD. This is my first introduction to the singing and songwriting of Greg Trooper. The album has a kind of bluesy, country feel. At times, vocally, Trooper reminds me of Bob Dylan and at other times Bob Seger. Then again he comes off as his own man. Cuts that stood out for me are This I'd Do, Green Eyed Girl, Sad,Sad,Girl, Close To The Tracks, and the title cut Make It Through This World. For me this was a real musical find. This one is a buy.

I saw Greg live in Ann Arbor a few days ago, opening for
the great Slaid Cleaves. He played solo, and put on a great show. I had never heard of him before, but now I will look at his other releases. He's an extraordinary songwriter. If you liked John Prine is his prime, you will love Greg Trooper.

This has been my favorite album of the year. Great, natural, country-soul. I originally purchased the album digitally, and I just bought it again from Amazon in order to get the lyrics.
Both the music and lyrics are brilliantly crafted.

Warning! The excellent songs on this CD will stick in your head and you will NOT be able to get them out! That's a good thing! This is Greg's best so far and I can't wait to get my hands on his next CD!

I bought this album largely on the basis of the excellent reviews on Amazon.com, and I wholly endorse the reviewers' universally positive views - this is a marvellous album, heartfelt, lyrical, gutsy, great melodies, with a lot to say. It beautifully captures the point at which folk and country come together. I can't imagine anyone not loving this. Buy it....
Others have singled out various tracks for praise, but my favourites here are "No Higher Ground" (a movingly heartfelt take on hurricanes) and "I Love It When She Lies". The only mystery to me is, why is Greg Trooper not better known?

Trooper Arrives,

Make It Trough This World is winning all the right awards in Nashville these days for all the right reasons. Trooper has been quietly around awhile and manages to sew all the threads of those experiences into a most powerful set of lyrical stories.. While his terrific live album, Between a House and a Hard Place, spotlights his brilliant lyric writing, this collection brings the best of all together with legendary producer Dan Penn. Penn uses just enough music to let the driving rhythms highlight the lyrical brilliance. While Trooper definitely has his own thing going here, if you appreciate John Prine, Guy Clark and Todd Snider you will love every single song on this one. And you'll have a new favorite song each listen through. Trooper has arrived!

I heard an interview with Greg Trooper on NPR and bought a few tracks from an online store! They were great! I actually went back and purchased the entire album, buying some songs twice, because I wanted to hear more. "Bluesy country feel" is about right; very relaxing music, with lyrics that are deceptively simple, and melodies that leave you humming them later.

This album swings from fairly conventional Nashville country, on "I Love It When She Lies," to the bluesy shuffle of "Green Eyed Girl," to folk rock grandeur on "No Higher Ground." And it vacillates through this range with panache and spirit. In a music world where mainstream music sets the expectations way too low, Greg Trooper is a smart, artistically ambitious troubadour. I wish we had more recording artists like him.

I discovered Greg Trooper while going through the discography of Kevin McKendree, the worldclass talent who plays all keys on this album. I am now just as devoted a fan of Greg Trooper's. This is not a record you can listen to a few times and forget about; this is one you'll be listening to frequently and for a long, long time. I'm surprised no one has picked my favorite cut, "This I'd Do," but they're all wonderful. It is an exceptional treat to buy a record where you like every cut, but this one is most assuredly an exception. I'm looking for wonderful things in the future from Messrs. Trooper and McKendree.
