Michelle's book is definitely targeted towards the "younger" reader, maybe someone in the age range of about 15-25, or someone who is just beginning to become interested in beauty and style. Make Up gives a brief overview of almost every category a girl might be interested in, from skin care to dress codes to DIY manicures to achieving the career you want. If you are the kind of person who reads beauty/style magazines, frequents Sephora or some other beauty megastore, browses style-watch blogs, etc - then most of what Michelle writes in the skin care, hair care, make up, and style sections is not going to present a lot of new information. Still, I think there's enough content and advice to each section that there's likely a few new things in here for most people, and this book is not out to be an in-depth guide.

The sections on skin care routine, make-up basics, hair & nail (& hand & foot & lips) care, fashion, and digital life were all fun & fast to read. Each left me with a few new ideas to implement, or at least reminded me of things I keep meaning to do (like I should be wearing vaseline on my eyelashes at every night and on my feet overnight once a week). The only section that didn't hold much appeal for me was the advice on job hunting and internships, but that's because it's clearly targeted towards people who are just beginning to apply for jobs without much experience in their chosen field, and I don't fall into that category. Even so, there's still worthwhile advice in this chapter, especially her work rules for everyone. On the other hand, the chapter on entrepreneurship gives really solid tips for how to succeed if you choose to start your own business. Overall, Make Up is a fun read that gives smart suggestions on virtually everything a girl might want/need to know.

As I carefully read this book I noted that highly successful people are often engaged in numerous simultaneous projects. When they seem to be subdued instead of dynamic, and nothing delightful or invigorating is happening in their lives at the moment, unbeknownst to the rest of us they are thinking up and evaluating new ideas. I believe that Michelle Phan’s life story follows this pattern, her latest endeavors are faithfully reported on social media, so you can easily check this out yourself. Although she has too many accomplishments to list here, her success is evident, she has over 7 million YouTube followers and her startup company Ipsy has $84 million in annual sales. Consequently Michelle’s ability to maintain her ranking as the number one YouTube Beauty guru by creating weekly makeup videos deserves our respect.

Michelle Phan recently released her book which is designed to help teenagers develop style and grace as well as gain a sense of how to make their own luck. The instant popularity of this book can be attributed to Michelle’s role as a YouTube starlet, because readers may be curious about the details of her rise to the top. The book also provides a lot of practical information on how to apply cosmetics, style hair, care for your skin and manicure your nails. Distinguishing herself in many ways besides her outward appearance helped Michelle succeed, she wrote this book was to share that wisdom.

First, the good things about the book:

1) It's gorgeous. The book is really quality and heavyweight, with beautiful glossy pages, a pretty, colorful design, and cute endpapers. There is lots of photography throughout the book, along with little sketches and info bubbles defining different terms. The colors and the typography all go really well together, and the whole thing is very well laid out to make this an attractive book you could feel proud to display on your coffee table.

2) It feels personal. You can feel Michelle's voice coming through, with the stories she tells about her childhood, and her own distinct way of speaking. It's cute, informal, and feels like having a chat with an older sister.

Now on to the things I was disappointed about:

1) Generic beauty info. For anyone who's ever read a women's magazine, a lot of the beauty information contained in this book might be redundant. There are no specific tutorials on makeup looks (you'll have to watch her videos for that) and a lot of what Michelle talks about is very generic information that most of us know already. Unless you have never looked at a piece of makeup in your life, you probably know where your t-zone is, what foundation is, and what it means to pluck your eyebrows. This book does cover the absolute basics well, so it might be a great resource for tweens and teens who are just being introduced to the world of taking care of themselves and trying makeup. But if you're already a fan of makeup or Michelle's videos, which I assume most people who buy her book are, you won't find anything new or noteworthy here.

2) Wrong medium.

The book looks great and I have always been a fan of Michelle Phan. The writing is okay and quite personal, since we get a view into her personal life and I really liked that. I also liked her thoughts on several things, such as organizing your wardrobe and throwing out the things you don't need anymore.

What I didn't like was that sometimes the book sounded a little... preachy? The overall tone got a little annoying, as she would say things that made me feel like she believes her methods are the best and the most 'morally right' ways. She also refers to herself as a "beauty guru" a few times, which I dislike, mainly because it sounds a little too pretentious and doesn't seem to reflect her overall modest composure. Just little quips like that bother me a little. Other than that, there were a few chapters on skincare and makeup where I found her information too vague to follow. In addition, there was a section on hair braiding which was INSANELY hard to follow and I would've liked a better medium to convey all of this information, such as accompanying step-by-step photos.

Maybe I had expected too much from this book, seeing as to how helpful and visual her tutorials were. It seemed as if there were more photos of her than the products and instructions that we need to actually do things. I wished there were a lot more tutorials on stuff that she posts about online, like different methods of makeup application and her favourite brands of facial moisturizers and stuff like that. I wanted less of her face in my face, and more of the content. It was an okay read and I appreciated that pre-orders get an extra book jacket to replace our covers.
