More of Doug Please,
This review is from: Make Up in Love (Audio CD)
When last we visited Doug Stone he had a career. Unfortunately he join the growing list of once commercially successful artists who now cannot get radio play. This was one of my favorite releases of 1999 and it deserves far more recognition than it got. Make Up In Love's title track is a heartwarming yarn of enduring optimism in loves ability to conquer poverty. Other highlights include "Surprise" reminding the listener of the fears, joys, twists and turns of a maturing love relationship, "Deeper Than That" celebrating loves inner beauty, and my favorite (co-written by Stone), "A Room Without A View. Stone shines on every ballad he records - "The Difference Between A Woman and A Man" and "Oh Moon" are two more stellar examples of this. A worthy remake of "Take A Letter Maria" is also included. The only weak offering is "The Heart Holds On," a duet with Leslie Satcher whose voice does not compliment Stone's.

I enjoy Doug's "country" voice so much. The songs are not what I expected. "Make up in Love" and "Take a Letter" are familiar and easy listening. Doug is the storyteller within his music. I may have to "listen" a few more times to fully enjoy the songs without being too analytical. "Room Without a View" has great potential.

I have been a Doug Stone fan since his first CD and Stone has often been known for his ballads. They were usually songs built on strong melodies, romantic lyrics, and sung with great passion. Even his uptempo song (like "Why Didn't I Think of That) were built around strong hooks, making them witty and great singalongs. Unfortunately none of these qualities are present in this CD. Sure, there are those ballads and uptempoes but they lack the catchy melodies and the passion. Doug Stone's duet with Leslie Satcher "The Heart Holds On" is a very incoherent song that keeps changing in its melody. The only ballad that is matchable to Stone's previous ballads is "Deeper Than That." A beautiful love song that love is deeper than skin deep. But having heard Shenandoah's version from a few years ago, Stone's version pales in comparison. Somehow his heart is just not in it. He just doesn't convince me that he means it. "A Room Without A View" verges between the good and acceptable. It is a painful song of heartbreak that is not bad but not good enough compared to song of Stone's earlier ballads (like "Better off in a Pine Box," "Coming in Out of the Rain" etc). The same can be said about the title track. This CD has its fair share of its uptempoes too. But they are formulaic and easily forgetable. "Letter to Maria" -- his second single from this album -- is just a fast number heavy on the drums. Honestly I cannot remember the melody after many listens. The rest of the uptempoes are just that, forgetable. It's good that Stone is back but this is a disappointing release. He should spend more time selecting his songs. Although his voice is certainly refreshing to hear and still great!

This album has it all and then some. Great Ballads he's known for and the faster songs are great as well. Buy it you won't be disappointed. C.B.
