Editorial Reviews

Review

Leslee Evans has come up with a great collection of quilted bed runners, each of which is accompanied by coordinated extra items which can transform your bedroom without the bother or expense of making a full sized bed quilt. Leslee matches bed runners with embellished sheets, pillows and shams, using a range of different techniques and styles. If you feel overawed by the idea of completing a large project then this is a clever alternative. Completing one item at a time gives you more flexibility in deciding how many of the projects you want to make, and also ensures that the chosen theme is spread across a number of focal points in the room. Some of the designs are double sided, so you also get a choice of which design to display, whilst knowing it will coordinate well with the other items. This is a really good idea as it encourages you to experiment with styles and techniques, and the combination of lots of smaller projects will encourage you to finish the set. The designs themselves are fairly bold and contemporary, but there are a couple of project sets featuring more traditional blocks, but set in a modern, interesting layout. --Popular Patchwork Magazine

Leslee Evans' new book includes patterns for 9 bedroom ensembles, each featuring a quick-to-make bed runner and coordinating accessories. Whether your style is classic, playful, earthy, or elegant, there are quilted projects here to freshen any bedroom in your home. Picking up some brand new Sumatra batiks by Blank Quilting would be a great way to start on several of Leslee's patterns. The depth of color and intriguing patterns in these fabrics will make your bedroom a unique, interesting retreat. --McCall's Quick Quilts Magazine

One of the hardest things about being a quilter is having to choose what quilt you are going to make for your own bed. "Make Your Bed: Quilted Bed Runners, Pillows, and More to Suit Your Style" by Leslee Evans gives you many decorating options so you don't have to choose just one.

Leslee Evans has designed pillows and runners to accent a simple quilt or bedspread. The colors, themes and styles offer something for everyone. Not only that, but many of the runners are designed to be reversible so that one runner can do double duty. My daughter has already chosen "Houndstooth Runner" and it's flip side "Suit's Me" for when she goes to college.

The directions make these pillows and runners suitable for even beginning quilters. The cutting and sewing directions for "Waves Runner" even take the fear out of sewing curved seams. She addresses making curved outer edges, as well as binding quilts that aren't rectangular. The variety of pillows and shams included are not only for use with these runners, but I can see making matching pillows to coordinate with any bed quilt.

I love the runners in this book. I can see them for use on beds, but also in other locations. Runners to go over the back of a sofa with matching throw pillows, table runners to be switched out seasonally, or even making some of the pieced pillows into placemats. The decorating options are endless.

"Make Your Bed" is a book which provides wonderful ideas not just for decorating your bedroom, but for your entire house.

What a great idea to add color and style to the bed! Instead of a full quilt, the patterns in this book are for pillows and reversible bed runners that drape across the bed.

There are good basic instructions to make the runners, but also instructions to embellish sheets and pillowcases. There is a how-to for making "The Easiest Pillow Ever" and pillow shams. The instructions are clear, with diagrams, color pictures, and full-sized templates.

The beautiful Rose Irish chain Runner is an easy four-patch with a scalloped edge design. Perfect for the reverse side is the "Scattered Leaves" runner. There are also instructions for matching pillowcases and sheets. What a pretty set!

There is a "Houndstooth/Suits Me" set and a youthful Pizzazz/Starry Night set with appliqués and loose stitch-on decorations. For your Batiks there is the serene Waves and for your brights there is the Playful squares set. There is an elegant Floral Silk runner, the natural Forest Runner, and the cheerful Friendship Star. My favorite is the earthy Leaves-and-Trees with maple leaves and a tree scene. The flip side for this one is a bold Rail Fence.

This is one of my favorite quilt books this year. There is something for all quilt skill levels, including beginners to quilting.

I have so much material, but not all of it matches well. This book is terrific for using those as these quilts don't take up that much material, not like a big whopper quilt. I didn't feel like this was a MAJOR project in a way, not intense enough to be boring boring boring. Also making several can compliment your mood. I love bright colors and a smaller quilt like this doesn't create a room you want to back out of. It is cool!

Bed Runners are all the rage at the moment. Hotels are using them and it is a great way to add a touch of color to your own bedroom.

With nine different patterns, there is sure to be one that fits your lifestyle or is the perfect one as a gift for a friend or family member. Every pattern comes with a coordinating pillow and some have other extras such as ways to decorate the sheets or a sham. The projects are divided into "feelings" such as serene or playful. Whatever mood you choose, these will make your bedroom pop.

The book begins with a dozen pages of general instructions. The projects themselves have a photo and a paragraph about the item. Finished project and block sizes are given and the materials and cutting lists are clearly written. Graphics are shown along with the written directions for extra visual help.

Templates are provided at full size as well as quilting suggestions. The final page is a bio about the author and a web site address to find out more. Be sure to try several of these for quick presents or for your own home.

Bedrunners are so much fun to make and can be made in much less time than it takes to make a quilt. The variety of projects in this book spans everything from whimsical to traditional to contemporary. This could easily have been a pillowmaking book as well. Leslee gives directions about how to trim and embellish store bought sheets and pillowcases. What fun! But there are lots of other fun pillow projects. This book is a great investment if you want to dress up any bedroom.

Go for it!! For someone who hasn't made a table runner before, this book provides the novice with the tools for making a bed runner. With mostly traditional patterns and a couple of nontraditional patterns included, it will give one a good idea of how to make changes for "that special look" we all strive for. I especially like the corded pillow shams and the delicate bead fringe.
