It was educational and we had a fun time making it.

The plastic tray included for microwaving the chicle melted (leaving a big mess in the microwave).

Mostly, I like toys like this because it is time we spend together, accomplishing something.

I purchased several kits to enhance our science program during Vacation Bible School and the kids loved making the chewing gum. It was a pretty sticky activity but the gum easily washed off their hands and face. We limited the activity to 8 to 11 year-olds and they were very enthusiastic about it. The instructions are easy to follow but I would recommend just allowing the kids to roll and knead the gum in the confectioner's sugar and flavoring and making gum balls. The flavor doesn't last long but the fun is in the making of the gum and understanding where gum comes from not in the end product. We used one kit for 6 to 8 children and that gave them each a nice piece of gum at the end.

Awesome and fun with cool information about the making of and history of gum. Chewing gum is very sticky, however and tricky to clean, but don't let that put you off. It's good family learn-u-cational fun.

Bought this as something to do with my daughter other than playing games and watching TV. She's recently picked up a chewing gum addiction so I figured she'd love this.

Of course when I got it out of the box she was bouncing with excitement.

Some initial comments on it. First DON'T use it in the microwave. Just take the time to do it on the stove, it only took about 10 minutes to heat the chicle to the point where it was workable. Microwaving you run the risk of the tray melting which would leave a horrible mess everywhere. The chicle is extremely sticky until you incorporate the corn syrup. If you get any in the pan the water keeps it from sticking. It's just easier, and the tray wont melt.

Ok, now to the actual review. The little story contained in the kit was interesting, my daughter really learned something from it and can recite the origins of the chicle and the trees it comes from, and as a bonus I got to teach her about the phases of matter from boiling the water as well as melting the chicle.

It is hot so you'll need to do some of the work at first, but once you incorporate the corn syrup and start incorporating the sugar and flavoring its cool enough. She loved getting messy and having some fun rolling and squishing the mixture and putting the flavors in. It was completely doable for a 4 year old. (She just turned 4).

The finished product turned out pretty darn good too. It's sweet enough, the flavors are decent, and the texture is perfect. She absolutely loves chewing it and it made about 30 decent size pieces of gum. I enjoy it too, even though the flavor doesn't last that long it remains sweet and holds it's texture for the hours that I chewed it.

I'd definitely buy it again and she's asking already when we can make some more. That earns 5 stars in my book.

We used this kit and were pleased with the results. The kit contains all the materials you need to make a hefty amount of cinnamon or peppermint gum. Also included is an informative instruction sheet that discusses green issues and the rain forest as well as low-level science explanations.

The written materials, including instructions, are well done. Everything you need is in the kit. You get lots of tasty gum. On the negative side, there is a lot of stirring and kneading of thick material.

My 5 year old daughter and I did this together, and she loved this. Yes, it is a little messy, and no the flavor does not last forever, but that simply is not the point! She beamed with pride at her creation and had everyone try some. It was not that bad at all. :) Mostly, I like toys like this because it is time we spend together, accomplishing something.

Good concept as in teaching kids about where chewing gum originally came from and the importance of saving the rainforests (avoiding mass farming/ imported produce or manufactured goods would probably help more)

Comes with a microwaveable tray and "gum/chiclo" pellets, which you're supposed to melt in the tray in the microwave. Ours barely melted (have a 1000 watt micro with a turntable), and even though I did try to stir before re-microwaving, most of the pellets remained fully intact while a corner of the "microwavable tray" melted through, thus stopping the possibility of continuing to melt the remaining pellets, so we went ahead with the next step, adding the flavors, then covering a surface with confectioner's sugar, so that you can knead/roll the "gum" out, however, some spots of the gum remained extremely "gummy" while other areas were so dry (or not melted) that it cracked and wouldn't hold together. But, we pressed on...it never formed a sorta "doughy" consistency, just kinda a big hard STICKY slab that was getting harder by the moment, so we decided it was time to cut the pieces out and try to wrap them. We each had one of the first pieces and were pleased, but the flavor completely died within (honestly) probably less than a minute, just leaving chewing a tasteless gummy thing...not too cool.
