I purchased "Make It Your Own" today and am really satisfied with it. This book doesn't teach you to design patterns - it teaches you how to modify them! It includes ideas (and the instructions to create the patterns for these ideas) such as altering necklines and collars, adding drawstrings and overlays, creating asymmetrical closures, button-on accessories and lots more. My favorite was the petal sleeve which you could add on to a regular sleeveless shirt. I also liked the bell cuffs and belt closures. (Remember - you can work these ideas into any pattern or add them onto a garment you already own!) Finally, this book includes ideas to open up your creativity and "inner child". It also has helpful hints on where to find ideas for your designs. Recommended for anyone who's sick of the "cookie-cutter clothes" most patterns create.

This book is excellent for even the most untalented of sewers who desires to add her own embellishments to a pattern.

This book has as much information condensed into a small manageable format, than many of my college texts on the subject....and at a fraction of the cost. These authors have shown a myriad of ways to gently alter existing clothing or patterns to enable you to create clothing uniquely individual. Some of the ideas are a bit fashion backward, but just wait....the ebb and flo of fashion will bring them round again.The book shows ways to alter collars, sleeves, cuffs, make overlays and more. It will stir your own imagination too! I stumbled on my copy while going through books to donate, sell and pitch. What a new find for me again!!! Kudos to the authors of this treasury of ideas.
