Plasticland, once hailed as the true future of psychedelic music, released several great albums of acid-drenched, neo psychedelic, mod rock. Formed in 1980 and based in Milwaukee, Plasticland were armed with a Mellotron, fuzzboxes and a mission, delivering the U.S. ‘80s underground a much-needed shot of Small Faces, Who, Pretty Things and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, all topped off with pop smarts and delivered with style. Not just another retro outfit, when the definitive history of psychedelic music is written, you can bet Plasticland will be up there alongside the pioneers of the genre because they had the vision, daring, humor and imagination to take their music forward.

Plasticland were one of the most amazing psychedelic pop bands of any era. While they were often compared to 60's pioneers like Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd and the Pretty Things, Plasticland took that trip further than anyone could have imagined. Though rooted in the 60's, Plasticland was a band of the 1980's and never succumbed to the excesses of prog rock and endless meandering jam sessions. Every song is a tightly constucted gem fiercely executed in a style as sharp as any punk rock band. It's great to see them finally get their due with this well selected compilation of their best tracks. The sound quality far exceeds that of the 80's era CD releases. The liner notes by Nigel Cross are informative and entertaining. The packaging is first rate. Get this CD.

I'll try to convey in words just how good this is...If you like any of the more cerebral and/or danceable stuff from the Nuggets compilations (of which Plasticland makes an appearance on Children of Nuggets) or just want to have the perfect soundtrack for your all night psych/rock/garage extravaganza...don't you dare hesitate to purchase this disc. How this is not rocketing up the charts is beyond explanation. Sure, not every great song of their's is on this, but that would require a box set. Here's hoping a deluxe edition of this will come out with a full color booklet showing these gents in all of their sartorial splendor.

Update: Looking forward to Vol.2...i.e. the rest of their recorded catalogue from the same period (incl. b-sides) seeing the lite o'day. Ryko...uh, hello?? Plasticland lives!

I've heard a bit here and there about this fan-FREAKING-tastic psychedelic band, but this was only their second CD I've ever heard. Total of thirty mind-altering tracks here to serve you well. Some of the tunes I couldn't get enough of were "Color Appreciation", "Sections", the way-out there "Euphoric Trap Door Shoes", "Wallflowers" and the somewhat innocent sounding "Mushroom Hill". Should do a lot for fans of the Pretty Things, Deviants, Outrageous Cherry, Asteroid No.4, Syd Barrett and Frijid Pink. Highly recommended.
