VERY POWERFUL MOVIE,
This review is from: Make The Yuletide Gay - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
HELLO, THIS MOVIE IS A VERY POWERFUL MOVIE AND GIVES THE INSIDE OF BEING GAY AND TO RELATE TO PARENTS AROUND THE WORLD. IT IS A PART OF LIFE AND VERY UPLIFTING AND EMOTIONAL FOR KIDS THAT ARE OUT THERE TRYING TO FINE THEMSELVES. IT HAS A VERY GOOD LINE OF CAST AND STORYLINE THAT PROBABLY ALOT HAVE NOT SEEN. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO ANY FAMILY WITH SONS AND DAUGHTERS RELATING ON HOW TO EXPRESS OF BEING GAY OR LESBIAN, AND TO KNOW THAT WE ALL BREATH THE SAME AIR AND BLEED. ITS WHAT YOU MAKE OF YOU LIFE AND SOMEONE ALWAYS NEED TO BE LOVED. DARREL ARCEO

This review is from: Make The Yuletide Gay - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
My general response was much closer to the positive and supportive reviews rather than the negative reviews. However, I can understand some of the grumpy responses of the 1 or 2 star reviewers. The movie's script is actually rather weak. Much of the secondary development is very muddy, hence one has to be paying a bit of attention to realize that although the parents at one time lived in Wisconsin (way too many DONCHA KNOWS are used to indicate this fact - one more and I would have chucked the whole DVD in the trash) they actually presently live somewhere in California - various bits of dialog, the flora seen in the background of establishing shots, and the urban architecture all confirm this. If true this is why, despite the sputtery outrage of one reviewer, they can be outside in December without wearing Arctic gear: but I take his point - one shouldn't have to be studying the background plant life to know where the main characters live. Further, many of the attitudes towards being gay expressed by the main characters reflect an earlier period of social evolution. Of course, for people who are middle aged and above, this is okay, I would guess, as this approach provides everyone with a circumstance with which they can identify. Such a generous spirited approach is typical of the whole movie and is one of its most attractive features. The acting is not stellar, as one reviewer commented, but is more than adequate to the task set for the actors in my view. After all they are not conveying gut wrenching tragic emotions, but are being normal people having a conflicted time at the holidays - as who does not?. It seems to me that they do just fine. Keith Jordan is an attractive man and his delivery of the line "alone at last" injects a grown up and erotic element into the relationship between Olaf and Nathan that would have, done slightly more frequently, rescued the film from being a bit too precious. One weakness of the script that really annoyed me was the transition made by the mother at the end of the film, which was not at all foreshadowed in the earlier part of the film, was actually contradicted by much of the elaborate unfolding of her character and seemed poorly connected to anything at all.
However, I liked the film, will watch it again next Christmas, very likely, and will leave the grinching, often justified, to the more serious critics. I like having a warm spirited story of two boys working out some structural difficulties in their love affair available for Christmas viewing. If nothing else, if shown to really conservative relatives during the pre-holiday build up, it might induce enough cardiac trauma to keep them sidelined during holiday parties - always welcome in my experience, doncha know.
