Allegro 2002 Lacks Basic Notation Features, January 16, 2005
This review is from: Allegro 2002 (CD-ROM)
I bought Allegro 2002 mainly for the hyperscribe feature, allowing one to play directly into the computer via a midi device. Although this worked quite well, there were a few problems: First of all, in hyperscribe mode, Allegro does not allow tied notes between bar/measure lines. If you hold a note over the bar line it will not register in the following measure and will be notated as a rest. This alone was a major drawback, since most of my music contains tied notes over bar/measure lines. Second, I noticed that the ability to layer (have 2 independant melodies on one staff simultaniously) is unavailable in hyperscribe mode. For example, if a note is held while other notes continue to play, Allegro will cut off the held note the instant it recognizes another note being played. These two problems prevent my music from transcribing accurately and as a result, I may end up trading it for Finale 2005 or the equivelent (assuming they don't have the same problems). My rating: ***
