Book Description

This is a thoroughly revised and updated version of a standard work of reference, first published in 1956, second edition in 1974. The third edition incorporates the extensive research of the last twenty years: biographical information on more than 1500 makers (including 500 not listed previously) and details of their surviving instruments are now separated into two substantial parts, the second part now including detailed descriptions and remarks on more than 2,000 instruments. The main text is complemented by four tables, a geographical and chronological conspectus of makers, and an enlarged seven-language glossary of technical terms.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An indispensable reference that should be a part of any well-stocked public or academic library collection."--The Tracker

"A unique and indispensable compendium."--Choice

"Boalch III is truly a monumental work, a tribute both to its eponymous originator and to Charles Mould. We should be grateful that the latter undertook the task, and enormously thankful that he carried it off so well."--Early Keyboard Journal

"Incorporating all that was known about instruments and their builders in 1956, the year the reference first appeared, Makers of the Harpsichord and Clavichord has grown in comprehension and detail thanks to the devotion of editor Charles Mould."--Piano Journal

"The much expanded "Boalch 3," a decade in preparation, supersedes earlier editions as an indispensable reference tool for music libraries and keyboard historians; it will also enlighten instrument collectors, builders, performers, program annotators, indeed anyone with more than a passing interest in antique keyboard instruments."--Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society
