From Library Journal
Symons seeks "to show the course of literary modernism as it developed in Britain and America" by tracing the careers of modernism's key figures (Pound, Joyce, Eliot, and Wyndham Lewis) through its birth and decline. Curiously, his book reveals no particular personal involvement in the works discussed and generates little excitement about them. It is largely literary history and biography (tending to foreground the sexual and other peculiarities of its subjects). While useful as an introduction to the period, as literary criticism it proceeds from a rather narrow, simplistic perspective and barely scratches the surface.
