This review is from: Makeshift Marriage (Paperback)
Back cover: She wanted him -- on any terms!

Maggie agreed to marry Blake Morden and accompany him to Hong Kong even though he couldn't say, "I love you." She'd share his life, if not his love.

Then, on the eve of their wedding, Blake changed his plans -- he wanted out. And pride flew out the window when Maggie realized she couldn't survive without him.

So she refused, and risked the worst thing possible -- his hate.

MY REVIEW:

Blake wanted to marry OW but she married OM. Maggie helps the drunk and heartbroken Blake to avoid making a scene by taking him to her place. Now Blake wants her to go on the Hong Kong trip even though she had a reason not to go. Not quite sober Blake comes up w/ a nifty plan - a makeshift marriage! Of course Maggie jumps on this because she will take Blake anyway she can get him.

A few days before the nuptials Blake wants to cry off as OW is free now. Yet Maggie loves this masquerading POS. She thinks for herself and shows up for the wedding. Blake is violently angry. Smarmy comments by the so called hero and then off he goes to London leaving Maggie to fend for herself w/ OM in Hong Kong for at least a week while he returns to OW, and to see about an annulment. Which for some reason they can't get, but I don't know why.

Blake claims he called someone and discovered the potential embarrassment Maggie was causing him, in Hong Kong (yet he didn't call) - he was called. He didn't even care enough to find out how his new bride was doing w/out him. What was Blake getting up to while he was gone and what was he going to do w/ OW when he left Maggie for that week? He discovers things about the OW, had an enlightening conversation w/ his father where he discovers why Maggie went through w/ the wedding, and now suddenly Blake wants to stay married to Maggie and he is entitled to one stupid mistake, OW, and let's be happy families.

I felt like Blake's professing of love was a little too convenient and completely out of left field. Okay you know it's a romance, but it was NOT believable. It sounded more like him trying to make the best of a situation and trying to hang on to his job. Maggie discovers OW in Hong Kong and Blake has been working late - so she puts two and two together. Odd when Blake was w/ OW he would leave work earlier and earlier to be w/ OW, yet he doesn't do this for Maggie. OW gets into a mess and calls upon Blake, and of course Blake not only pretends to be an H he also moonlights as legal counsel in foreign countries! Amazing!! Oh but he is clueless where OW is concerned.

He loves Maggie and thinks he could make her love him too. WTH not if she don't he can shake and strangle her into love! He works really hard at the happy families stuff too. He woos Maggie w/ some words that a starving for affection woman would accept from the guy she would take at all costs and tosses in some dancing b/w the sheets. Seems all is forgiven and I was wondering what happened, where did I get lost? It really felt like a snow job by Blake. Think he is just trying to pacify Maggie so that all works smoothly for him because despite my convenient rose colored glasses, it just didn't work for me.
