The best makeup tutorial book for Asian women I've come across untill now, November 19, 2005
This review is from: Makeup For Asian Women (Paperback)
'Makeup for Asian women' is written by Jacelyn Tay, one of Singapore's leading actresses. Her own experiences in makeup, perfected by trial and error and her observations of the work of professional makeup artists have resulted in a great makeup book for Asian women, where she addresses most of the common problems Asian women face with makeup.
She explains how to do eye makeup on different Asian eye shapes: almond shaped (with narrow or thick double eyelids), small monolids, long monolids and round eyes. For someone who is beyond the basics of makeup, this will be the most interesting part of the book, but here and there were also other interesting things I picked up from this book.
Of course, this book contains a lot about the basic things of makeup, but she takes it a notch further by not only showing how to do eye makeup on the most common eye shapes, but also how you can shade and highlight parts of your face and fix 'problems' like close-set eyes, wide-set eyes, undefined bridge and certain face shapes, giving your face more definition. She also addresses the varieties in skin color of Asian women, ranging from fair, medium to dark and gives tips about which makeup colors look great on what skin color.
What I also like about her book is that she uses 'real people' in her photographs. Not the gorgeous big-eyed double eyelid models with great cheekbones like you see in many Asian makeup ads, but just normal looking girls.
Jacelyn Tay uses a lot of photographs that show you step-by-step how to apply your makeup. This book is a great how-to makeup tutorial for beginners in makeup. The basics are explained about skin types, makeup products (different textures, how to work with them and brand recommendations), makeup tools, how to work with your face shape, makeup colors for different skin tones, explaining the different facial features, applying base products, concealing, eyebrow shaping and filling them in, defining your eyes (eyeliner, curling, false eyelashes, how to eyeshadow for your eye shape, eye makeup for when wearing glasses), lips (full, thin, uneven and bow shaped), cheeks, highlight and shading.
The book also has tips for makeup looks for different occasions, like a barely-there makeup, casual makeup, 10-minute makeup for work (and makeup for when you're running late for work), evening makeup and what to take with you in your makeup bag for creating and maintaining this look. There are photographs of these makeup looks for different skin tones.
Last but not least, but also very important, she explains how to remove your makeup.
Overall, I found this a very enjoyable and helpful book with clear advice about how to apply your makeup. The book and pictures are nice and fresh looking and newer makeup textures/formulas like gel eyeliners, cheek gel, cheek mousse are also discussed in this book.
As far as I know this is the best makeup tutorial book for Asian women available in western countries (Asian Beauty by Margaret Kimura wasn't helpful at all and the makeup looks were tacky).

fun to read, June 4, 2007
This review is from: Makeup For Asian Women (Paperback)
What I like about this book is the models are "real" people that have pimples, dark eye circles, chubby faces...I'm tired of seeing already-perfect girls being made-up, give me some plain janes who really need it! The results are overall satisfying, although I don't think she did a good job on one or two of them. The classification on skin tones are too general, most people are not simply fair, medium, or dark. The book is a quick read, so the information within can't be very extensive, but she did offer some good advice about shading, concealing imperfections, and I am actually grateful she included how to create a double-eyelid look, because I have one eye that is double-lid and one eye that isn't!

I have expected more from this book! Slightly disapointed.
In my opinion, there are no special technique details mentioned for the asian womens makeup. If I would have known that, I wouldn't have bought this book. For some nice pictures I give 2 stars.
