Proof positive that older is better!,

At 74 and still growing, B.B. King has produced yet another CD that proves that you don't have to be young to have what it takes. Like 1998's "Blues on the Bayou" this CD sticks to the basics - classic B.B. classic blues. On the classic Buddy Johnson song "Since I Fell For You", with its tasteful and sublime piano, King has reinvented the song and has made it his own. Another classic, Willie Dixon's "Don't go No Farther" is given similar treatment as well. The CD contains 6 new B.B. King songs that hold up well to past B.B. compositions prooving that King is a classic bluesman as well.Makin' Love is Good For You - Yes Mr. B.B. it is and you can keep right on doin' it to us too!

Another winner,

If you loved "Blues on the Bayou" you'll love this: same band for the most part (B.B.'s touring band), same idea (stripped-down, "live" sounding disc produced by B.B. and featuring mostly new songs), generous track selection, energetic playing. B.B. may be past his prime in both playing and singing, but it hardly matters. This is a strong set with committed, passionate music. While a contemporary like John Lee Hooker is mostly coasting, playing the same songs over and over and relying on guests, B.B.'s approach is marvelously encouraging. "I Got to Leave This Woman" gets the disc off to a sensational start. "Don't Go No Farther" and a couple of B.B.'s own songs are nice. When he sings, on A.C. Reed's "I'm in the Wrong Business": "I'm in the wrong business, swear I ain't lyin', I stay hungry, broke all the time," you have trouble believing him. You're just fine, B.B.

a dissenting view,
By Patrick Duffy (Beaverton, OR USA) - See all my reviews

I love B.B. King's work. I listen to it almost every day. But I was disappointed in this album. Unlike "Blues on the Bayou" and some of his other recent albums, "Makin Love Is Good For You" is tired. The blues is not always high energy, adrenalin heavy. But this album's material is not first class and the performances reflects it. It sounds like it was done late in a long tour. I hope his new album, coming out next month, is better. He is still the King.
