5.0 out of 5 stars Its the best of all Gatemouth's recordings!, July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Makin Music (Audio CD)
Very few people, if anyone, would think a C/W star like Roy Clark and a bluesman like Gatemouth Brown would get together in Tulsa, OK, make an album of such great quaility yet be so diverse in their music genres. If you like a mixture of Texas and Delta Blues with just a bit of Western swing thrown in, this is the best of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!!!!!!, May 27, 2005

Two masters of the strings really show what the instrument can do! Exceptionally clean with no electronics used to enhance the artists true talent. If you liked the "guitar duel" in the movie "Crossroads", this album is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one puts you in the "party" spirit!, July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Makin Music (Audio CD)
Whether country, blues, rock, etc. is the type of music you favor, this is one of those upbeat "hard to catogorize" all out fun "party" albums. Not just "talk about at party" or "4:00 in the morning", but the whole album is best enjoyed when you want to get into that "party spirit"... Highly recommended for those who appreciate true works of art!

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific, March 22, 2007
This review is from: Makin Music (Audio CD)
I got this as an LP and would listen to it over and over. Just sensational guitar playing by Gatemouth Brown and Roy Clark. A college friend of mine, a real blues aficionado, was shocked by the idea of Roy Clark playing blues but Roy shows he's got the chops. The man can play anything. Unfortunately, this album is almost impossible to find on CD. But it's well worth having.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Recollection of this album, April 3, 2006

I first heard these two master guitarists when they were promoting the album on the Tonight Show in the 1979. It is my recollection that Brown had financial difficulties at the time. Clark was the highest paid performer in country music, and was a fan of Brown. In effort to help out Brown, he cut this album. The result was one of the hottest albums you ever would want to hear. There is no other word to describe this album but Jumping! Country Swing meets Delta Blues! For any fan of this type of music or a fan of fine guitar playing in general... this is a must. (For another great album and another demonstration of Roy Clarks versatility check out "Roy Clark & Joe Pass Play Hank Williams")

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I was there, December 19, 2009

This sounds like a weekend on the porch with some great musicians, drinking and, well having a party.

If you like slick, produced, albums, stay away. These guys were having fun, and fun to them is, well, makin' music. Good music.

"Drifter" is as good as the blues get.

Yeah, its expensive. I bought my first, vinyl, copy from Wuxtry in Athens GA for cheap in the early '80s. Then bought a CD for about $30 a few months ago, after looking for years. I don't know who, but one of my "friends" has it. So, now, I paid $40 something for another copy, which will be kept under lock and key.

There are a couple of tracks that are just OK. I suspect you will find one or 2 that you will call classics. Siphon hose, anyone?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Miracle!, April 8, 2009

It is a rare thing indeed when a recording not only captures the almost obscene joy that went in to the making of it, but also manages to fully envelop you in that joy while you listen. That "Makin' Music" achieves this feat should be no surprise, given the talent involved. Roy Clark, the fast-picking guitar virtuoso and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, the King of the blues guitar, deliver pure recorded joy on this sensational recording!

Every track (and I mean EVERY track) is infused with an infectious joy that hits your ears like a burst of pure, sonic sunshine and has the power to turn even the darkest day into a big, happy celebration. I simply cannot understand why this recording never found the ridiculously massive audience it deserves, given what it delivers.

If you are a fan of either of these two musical giants, or of their respective musical styles...heck, even if you just want to hear something that will put a mile-wide smile on your face and keep it there for days, I cannot stress too strongly that you do whatever it takes to procure a copy of "Makin' Music"...I guarantee it will become one of the most listened-to recordings in your music library!

5.0 out of 5 stars All Music Guide, May 14, 2007

Review by Bill Dahl
Surround two of the most versatile guitar pickers on the planet in a studio with a cadre of world-class sidemen and what do you get? This irresistible duet album by Gate and Roy Clark, first out on MCA. Good vibes abound as the fun-loving pair blast out "Caldonia," "Take the 'A' Train," "The Drifter," "Justice Blues," and more, trading licks, vocals, and quips with a jam session-oriented looseness.
